| Greetings! |
PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
Missouri's U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill recently hosted a celebration party for the volunteers who staff the Kirkwood Train Station and keep it running year 'round. She thanked them and personally served them cake in honor of their ten years of service to the station and the City of Kirkwood. Pictured left to right, volunteer Glenn Hensley, station manager Bill Burckhalter, and Senator McCaskill.
Have you taken a really great photograph of something or someone in Kirkwood recently? Your editor would love to use it in the newsletter. Simply email it to Info@Kirkwoodmo.org (or just reply to this newsletter), along with a brief description and your name. Thanks!

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT)
Are you one of those individuals who felt helpless and wanted to do something after the Joplin earthquake? Lots of people did. Well, here's your chance to get involved with an organization that helps out in a volunteer capacity when disaster strikes.
CERT volunteers have helped out during major storms that caused widespread power outages, by responding to phone calls and inquiries from residents. They help staff the EOC (Emergency Operations Center) during situations such as that, and sometimes they get hundreds of calls during a power outage. They also help out with the twice-yearly Drug Take Back Day that the Kirkwood Police Department runs in partnership with the DEA.

Happy Thursday! Have you ever noticed this fire hydrant painted like a dalmatian? It's located in downtown Kirkwood, in front of Fire House #1 on Argonne. I mention it because we are painting fire hydrants this summer and I want everyone to rest assured that this hydrant will keep its poochy look. Have you ever noticed that some hydrants have differently colored tops, called "bonnets"? Well, if you want to know more, check out the this little story on the home page of our Website, because there really is a method to this madness. City workers are out and about all over the place this summer, getting things painted and trimmed and repaired. Here's another photo I took this week of some tree trimming going on at McEntee Park, next door to the Police Department. It looks like we are in for some high humidity and occasional thunder storms over the next few days, a small price to pay for that gorgeous weekend we just had, I guess, but glum nonetheless. Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
