GARDENERS' CORNER
GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK

Pinching Back Buds on Mums:  Pinch back buds on mums before the end of July to delay blooming until later in the Fall. Pinching back the four side buds will result in a larger bloom from the center bud.

Berries:  Cut and destroy the canes on blackberries/raspberries after they have borne fruit.  Only the new canes sprouting now will bear fruit next year.

The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers.  For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.
SENIOR CORNER
SAINT LOUIS COUNTY PROGRAM HELPS SENIORS FIND TRUSTWORTHY HOME REPAIR COMPANIES
St. Louis County residents who are 60 years of age or older and need skilled workers to tackle minor home repair or yard work should contact the County's Older Resident Program (CORP).  CORP will provide the names of skilled workers for a wide range of home repair and maintenance services, plus house cleaning and other chores. All workers are personally interviewed and subject to reference and police record checks. The program tracks customer feedback to ensure that work is completed in a satisfactory manner and workers are reputable, affordable, and competent.

CORP Home Care and Repair workers are independent contractors who provide services such as interior/exterior painting, carpentry, air conditioning / heating repair, and more. There is no charge to obtain the names of these individuals. However, fees for repair and maintenance services, often reduced for senior citizens, are negotiated between the customer and the worker.  For additional information, call the CORP office, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at:  314-615-4021.  TTY: 800-735-2966.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday) for today: Knowing my son is feeling a little better after a stomach bug this week kept him in bed for two days; playing tennis despite the steamy weather; knowing that the heat and steam of a St. Louis July usually gives way to the warm, colorful beauty of a St. Louis autumn; getting all the schedules for this autumn's Greentree Festival updated on the Website (kirkwoodgreentreefestival.com) and in next month's utility insert (look for it in your utility bills beginning August 1); fresh peaches and kettle corn from the Kirkwood Farmers' Market; starting a new book by one of my favorite writers, Anna Quindlen; and a semi-free weekend with plans to finally go to the pool (where I will read said book).

How about you?  Pool this weekend?  New book?  Summer blockbuster movie?  Peach shopping at the Market?  Whatever you do, have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
