| Greetings! |
PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
Kirkwood Electric helped restore power in Hannibal, Missouri, back in May. After a possible tornado hit downtown Hannibal on May 20, Kirkwood crews traveled northward and worked over a six-day period to help restore electric service. In appreciation, the City of Hannibal gifted KE linemen with a Plaque and these "One Job" tee-shirts. Pictured left to right: Greg McClinton, James Hughes, Justin Weidner, and Tom Brinker. Kirkwood Electric joined forces with crews from Columbia, Palmyra, and other Missouri cities to provide assistance to restore Hannibal's system.
Kirkwood is a member of the MPUA (Missouri Public Utility Alliance), which provides assistance to other member cities as part of a Mutual Aid Program. The City has been the beneficiary of the mutual aid program in the past and is more than willing to assist cities during an emergency. Kirkwood Electric's own Rick McKinley heads up the mutual aid program in Missouri. We last participated in the mutual aid program in October 2012, when crews traveled east to help with electric restoration after Hurricane Sandy. Have you taken a really great photograph of something or someone in Kirkwood recently? Your editor would love to use it in the newsletter. Simply email it to Info@Kirkwoodmo.org (or just reply to this newsletter), along with a brief description and your name. Thanks!

SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS BRIDGE OVER I-64/HWY 40 CLOSED FOR 30 DAYS
The Spirit of St. Louis Boulevard bridge over Interstate 64 in Chesterfield will be closed for 30 days effective Monday, July 8, through Wednesday, August 7. Construction crews will raise the existing bridge to increase and improve clearance for vehicles on I-64.
The westbound I-64 exit at Spirit of St. Louis will remain open during the bridge closure. Traffic on the North Outer Road will be available, but it will be limited. Traffic will be controlled by a traffic signal to allow only one directional movement at a time adjacent to the work zone at the Spirit of St. Louis Blvd bridge. During the one month closure, motorists are advised to use the Boone's Crossing interchange to cross I-64 and access the athletic fields, trails and businesses along the North Outer Road. During most of the one month closure, the ramp from Spirit of St. Louis Blvd to eastbound I-64 will also be closed. Motorists can use Long Road or Boone's Crossing to access eastbound I-64.
The Spirit of St. Louis bridge work is part of the overall $110.9 million new I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River bridge being constructed by the Walsh-Alberici Joint Venture. The entire I-64 Daniel Boone Bridge project will be complete by December 2015.
EASTBOUND I-64 RAMP TO JEFFERSON AVENUE CLOSED FOR 3 WEEKS
The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor, Fred Weber Inc., closed the ramp from eastbound I-64 to southbound Jefferson Avenue just after midnight this morning (Thursday, July 11). The ramp will remain closed for three weeks, while crews connect the new ramp to the interstate and to Jefferson. While the ramp is closed, drivers can take the Grand exit from eastbound I-64, turn left on Chouteau and right on Jefferson, or take the 14th Street exit from eastbound I-64, turn right on Chouteau and left on Jefferson.

GARDENERS' CORNER
|
GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial, or bedding plant, is to water well. Beforehand, soak the root ball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface. Dig the planting hole, fill with water, and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently, and water with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry root ball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Remember: For shrubs and trees, bury only 80% of the root ball.
The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers. For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday) for today: Cooler weather (cool enough to play tennis tonight!), grilled chicken and asparagus, fresh produce from the Kirkwood Farmers' Market, shopping for good deals and early holiday presents at this weekend's Sidewalk Sale and Peach Festival, fresh peaches and cantaloupe, chocolate ice cream (a repeat TILT item), going to the movies with my son, driving my car with the top down, spending time with friends.
What's on YOUR T.I.L.T. for today? It promises to be a lovely weekend, with highs in the 80s and NO RAIN (that's the prediction so far, anyway). So have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
