Tomorrow's Hotdog Dayz event (Friday, June 28) will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Avery Park (see details below). The program is sponsored by Kirkwood's Police and Parks/Recreation departments.

JULY IS WOMEN'S MOTORCYCLE MONTH!
July is Women's Motorcycle Month and Kirkwood Public Library is celebrating with Doc's Harley-  Davidson with a Bikers and Books extravaganza. We will have a bike in our lobby during the month. Join us for the kick-off on Friday, July 5, 10 a.m., at the library for a talk about great St. Louis rides with Jared O'Neal from Doc's. The library will be at Doc's Harley-Davidson, 930 S. Activities will be bountiful during the Downtown Kirkwood Sidewalk Sale and Kirkwood Farmers' Market Peach Festival on Saturday, July 13. Visitors to Downtown will enjoy peach samples from local farmers as well as peach related treats and menu items at Kirkwood Farmers' Market. Local farmers will compete in a contest for the best locally grown peach. The Maple Jam Band will fill the market with music. Shoppers will find bargains all over Downtown Kirkwood. GREENTREE BOOKFAIR RETURNS

GREENTREE BOOK FAIR ACCEPTING DONATIONS NOW
Do you have books you would like to donate to a worthy cause? You can now drop off your donations at the Kirkwood Train Station. Donation bins will be placed on the northwest side of the station. Tax-deductible letters will be left in an envelope inside the bins. The following donations will be accepted: Hard-cover and paperback fiction and non-fiction books, children's books, sheet music, videos, and recorded music. Please NO encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, or software. All proceeds benefit the instrumental music program in the Kirkwood School District (all grade levels). The Greentree Book Fair is sponsored by the Kirkwood Band Boosters and the Kirkwood Orchestra Parent Association (parent support groups). Thank you.

PENCIL DRAWINGS OF DIANE REISING
The Kirkwood Area Arts Council will feature the work of watercolorist, Jeanne Conway through July 1. The pencil drawings of Diane Reising will be on display through July 29. Please join us for her opening reception Thursday, July 11, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Train Station, corner of Argonne Avenue and South Kirkwood Road. Exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Art may be viewed when the station is open for passengers.

GARDENERS' CORNER

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
Watering is essential once the weather is drier and warmer. Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy). This encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Approximately an inch of water a week will keep gardens and lawns well watered. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. Hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so.
The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers. For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

The Greentree Parade steps off Saturday, September 14, at 10am, in front of Kirkwood High School. It winds through downtown Kirkwood, up Kirkwood Road, and heads back down Argonne toward Kirkwood Park.

My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday) for today: Leaving for vacation tomorrow; fireworks; salty-hot weather and beating the heat at the Kirkwood Pool; rain (because it's better than drought); picnics; FREE summer concerts (THREE free concert series in Kirkwood); losing three pounds; chocolate frozen yogurt and raspberry iced tea; The Pirates of Penzance (currently at the Loretto Hilton, an Opera Theatre St. Louis production); good books and the time to read them (just finished The Might Have Been and Me Before You, both of which you can borrow from Kirkwood Public Library); and wearing shorts and sandals rather than boots and down coats.
No Issue Next Week: City offices will be closed next Thursday, and your editor will be out  of town, so there will be no edition of Weekly Happenings next week. I know this makes you all very sad (insert "smiley face" here), but I know you all will be busy yourselves next week since it's a holiday week, and one of our favorite ones of the year, right? We celebrate Democracy and the fight for democracy, as well as our shared history and heritage, in the most joyous and visual way we can: WITH FIREWORKS! Your editor will be watching the fireworks on the beach in Cape May this year, but she will be with you in spirit in Kirkwood Park next Thursday. Have fun, and be safe out there!
