Greetings!

PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
Gwen DeCoste, 17-month-old daughter of Gloria and Dave DeCoste, loves to swing.  She had a ball recently with her mom on the playground in Kirkwood Park, and Gloria shared a photo with us.  Gwen loves being outside.  She and her mom usually walk to the park, with Gwen getting in a stroller nap en route while mom gets some exercise, but as soon as they arrive and she wakes up, she "makes a beeline for the slides, then the swings."  Gloria says she would swing for hours if they'd let her and she never wants to get back in the stroller for the ride home.   (Some things are just universal, aren't they?)

Have you taken a really great photograph of something or someone in Kirkwood recently?  Your editor would love to use it in the newsletter.  Simply email it to Info@Kirkwoodmo.org (or just reply to this newsletter), along with a brief description and your name. Thanks!
MOSQUITO SEASON IS HERE!
WARMER WEATHER MEANS MOSQUITOES ARE HATCHING
Now that warmer weather is here, mosquitoes are hatching, and with all the rain, their numbers may be greater this year.  The City of Kirkwood does not handle ANY mosquito spraying.  That is all done by St. Louis County.  To find out if or when your neighborhood may be sprayed, please call:  314-615-0680.  For great information on how to keep mosquitoes under control at your house, visit their Website here.
NEWS FROM MODOT

MoDOT TO CLOSE EASTBOUND I-64 FOR SHORT PERIODS FRIDAY NIGHT

The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor, Fred Weber Inc., will have two lanes closed on eastbound I-64 starting at about 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, weather permitting.  Crews will be placing girders for the new Jefferson Avenue bridge over the interstate. While crews are moving girders, they will close I-64 for up to 15 minutes for safety until the girder has been set down.  All lanes are projected to open by 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning.  NEXT WEEK:  Crews will close two lanes on westbound I-64 to place girders for the new bridge starting at 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, with short-term closures as they swing the girders across the interstate.  All work is weather permitting and crews are projected to reopen all lanes by 7:00 a.m. June 15.

OTHER ROAD CLOSURES THIS WEEKEND:

Construction activities will close lanes on Interstate 170, Interstate 64 and Interstate 70 in St. Louis this weekend.  Motorists are also advised to check the Traveler Information Map for closed roads due to area river flooding at www.modot.org/timi.

~ Construction crews will close several lanes and parts of a ramp on southbound I-170 at Route 180 (St. Charles Rock Road) this weekend to continue preventative maintenance on an interstate bridge.  Two lanes of southbound I-170 at St. Charles Rock Road will close at 9:00 p.m., Friday, June 7.  One of the left-turn lanes on the ramp from southbound I-170 to eastbound St. Charles Rock Road will also be closed.  All closed lanes are scheduled to be open by 5:00 a.m. Monday.

~ Also in the City of St. Louis, MoDOT will have lanes closed on eastbound I-70 from 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 7, until noon on Saturday, June 8, from Washington to St. Louis Avenue.  One lane will be closed from 5:30 a.m. until noon on eastbound I-70 from St. Louis Avenue through the depressed section to the Poplar Street Bridge.

~ The ramp from westbound Interstate 70 to southbound Fifth Street will be closed starting at 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 10, until Monday, July 1, for bridge repair work.  The westbound I-70 bridge over Fifth Street is being rehabilitated and resurfaced as part of the westbound I-70 Blanchette Missouri River Bridge project.  Three lanes of westbound I-70 will remain open and the ramp from westbound I-70 to northbound Fifth Street will remain open during these three weeks.  However  on Monday, June 10, crews will close one lane of westbound I-70 from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m., Tuesday morning to set up the work zone and close the ramp to southbound Fifth Street.  Only two lanes will be open to traffic on westbound I-70 overnight Monday, June 10.  Three lanes will be back open for I-70 traffic by 5:00 a.m. Tuesday.

GARDENERS' CORNER
GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK

Now is the time to prune spring blooming shrubs, such as azaleas and spireas and trees such as dogwoods.  This task should be completed by the end of June.  Waiting until later risks cutting off next year's blooms.  Limit your pruning to no more than 25 percent of the size of the shrub or tree.

The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers.  For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.
RAINSCAPE REBATES PART 2
RAINSCAPE REBATES, PART 2:
Once again, landowners will be eligible for a reimbursement of 75 percent of approved and documented expenses - up to a maximum of $2,000 - related to landscaping yards to improve storm water management. The Deer Creek Alliance's Round Two applications can be picked up at Kirkwood City Hall, 139 S. Kirkwood Road, or downloaded from their Website, where you can also find additional information.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Your editor spent three days this week in training with SEMA (Missouri State Emergency Management Agency), learning about emergency management communications.  My head is still spinning with all the stuff I learned, but I am much more confident today about my ability to get information out to the good citizens of Kirkwood in the event of a tornado or other event.  Yes, it was very topical given the events of last week.  In fact, my family and I left Busch Stadium last Friday night at about 8:15, with sirens going off everywhere. We made it home okay and enjoyed the rescheduled game on Saturday, but lots of people in north county went without power for days.  Let's hope the St. Louis region has seen its last tornado for a while.

Do you like music?  In Kirkwood, you have lots of musical choices this weekend.  Tonight: "Fair Warning" plays at Station Plaza, as part of the Downtown Summer Concert series, starting at 6:30 p.m.  Next week, Blues Incorporated takes the stage at 6:30 p.m., in Station Plaza.  This Saturday:  Tunes at Ten presents "The Lulus" at the Kirkwood Farmers' Market, starting at 10:00 a.m.  Saturday Night: The Making Music summer concert series continues with the Gateway City Big Band, at 7:00 p.m., at the Lions' Pavilion in Kirkwood Park.

My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday) for today:  Finishing up three days of training, a weekend with no concrete plans (yay!) other than reading and weeding, salty caramel dark chocolate, and the sunny, 70s/80s weather being predicted for the weekend by the Weather Channel!

Have a great weekend.  See you next Thursday!
