GARDENERS' CORNER
GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK

Before applying mulch, water your plants, veggies, shrubs, and trees.  This allows the roots to stay hydrated and keeps the mulch from wicking away the surface moisture.  Apply 1"-2" of mulch around veggies and plants. For shrubs 2" is generally enough, and for trees 3"-4".  In all cases, especially trees, keep the mulch away from the stems of plants or the trunks of trees.  After applying mulch water again.

The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers.  For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
When Murray Pounds, director of Kirkwood's Parks & Recreation department, emailed me this week that the new sign had been installed at Walker Lake in Kirkwood Park, he also sent me photos, one of which I used above for the Photo of the Week.  At that time, he had not yet taken any photos of the finished monument and landscaping, so I headed over to the park and took some "completed" photos along with some general shots of the lake and the park.  It was such a delightfully beautiful day that I was disinclined to hurry back to the office, so I stalled by heading over to the pool, where I took some more photos.  Several of these, including the one of the duck family, are included in this newsletter.  A few hours later, Murray sent me another photo, which I'm also including here (right) because it's a much better one than those I took.  I pride myself on being a fairly good photographer, but I know a better photo when I see one, so here it is.  (You will also see this photo on the City's Facebook page if you have "liked" us there!)

Murray tells me that a formal Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for all the lake improvements, including the new path, the sign, the rain gardens, and more, is scheduled for June 3 at 6:30 p.m.   However, the path is open NOW for walkers, runners, and cyclists (see photo above), so ENJOY!  Meanwhile, if you are a handball or racquetball player, rest assured that a new court will be built over by the tennis courts over the next year, with completion expected in early 2014.

My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday) for today:  This glorious weather, even if it is a little chilly today (if anyone had told me I'd be wearing corduroy in late May...); the upcoming 3-day weekend; the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis' production of Twelfth Night opening tomorrow night in Forest Park (FREE! Green Show at 6:30; Play at 8pm); the POOL OPENING on Saturday; playing tennis with friends in Kirkwood Park now that the weather is better; planning my vacation for July (Atlanta and Charleston are on the agenda); honoring my father and all of our veterans on Monday:  Thank you for your service.

Have a great weekend.  See you next Thursday!
