MICHAELA HULL NAMED TO LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Kirkwood Police Explorer Post 9131 is pleased to announce that current police explorer Michaela Hull was selected to attend the 2013 National Law Enforcement Leadership Academy with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Washington, D.C. in June of 2013. Only 30 applicants were chosen out of hundreds across the country that applied.
The week-long academy focuses on leadership and will teach the dynamics of leadership, motivating others, and effective law enforcement leadership. Michaela has been a Kirkwood Police Explorer for four years and has risen to the current rank of Captain. In addition to her post duties, she currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Greater St. Louis Area Law Enforcement Explorer Association.
"Michaela has provided exceptional leadership and service to the community during her tenure with Explorer Post 9131," said Kirkwood Explorer Post Advisor Sgt. Tim Dixon. "She is very deserving of this honor."
Michaela Hull is a senior at Kirkwood High School, where she's been on the honor roll for the last three years. She is also a member of the high school's Lacrosse Team and is very active with the Link Crew. After graduation, she plans to attend Lindenwood University in the fall, majoring in psychology and minoring in criminal justice. Her goal is to one day become an officer with the City of Kirkwood Police Department.
Way to go, Michaela!

MAY IS MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH!
Motorcyclists and motorists are encouraged to safely "share the road" this May in observation of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. All motorists are reminded to watch for motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe, while motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists. There were 276 motorcyclists killed from 2010-2012.
"We're seeing more and more motorcycles on the highways," said Leanna Depue, chair of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety's executive committee. "Drivers of all vehicles need to be extra attentive. A motorcycle is one of the smallest vehicles on our roads, often hidden in a vehicle's blind spot. Everyone needs to watch for motorcycles."
Very often, drivers of cars and trucks don't see motorcycles until the last second. And sometimes not at all. Motorcycle operators have to anticipate the moves of other drivers and be extra cautious of road conditions and debris. Motorcycle experts recommend motorcyclists also complete some type of training before getting out on the road. There are 29 training locations in Missouri. You can find the one nearest you at www.mmsp.org/. For more information, visit www.savemolives.com, or on Facebook or Twitter at Save MO Lives. Arrive Alive.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
|
I was on my way to the bakery to order (my own) birthday cake today when I stopped in at Rosemary Grove, a free-trade gift shop in downtown Kirkwood. There were bras everywhere, in baskets and boxes and hanging from the ceiling (see photo). Not kidding. In addition to some lovely jewelry and handmade items for sale, the tiny business is running a bra donation for the women of India. No, the recipients won't be wearing the bras. They will be selling them. The bras are donated to women who have been rescued from sex slavery and who will re-sell them. Bra shops turn a good profit in India, so selling bras is a way for these women to support themselves and their children. Rosemary Grove is also offering an incentive: Bring "a bra and a buck" in for a chance to win a $100 give-away. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are doing good things for others and how many ways there are to do good things for others. Speaking of doing good things, be sure to read the story above about Miss Michaela Hull. Actually, we kind of expect her to do great things. Ta Ta for Now! See you next Thursday! Beth von Behren
