Ashes

But when you pray, ... close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen.
Matthew 6:6

Ashes are fine. I like the tradition. Yet, it is an outward sign. Rather, what is between you and the Father is truly important. In that closet, with no one looking, confess your sins, repent, look to Jesus' cross-established forgiveness, and emerge to live in that forgiveness to the glory of the God Who sent His Son to suffer and die for you.

Gracious God and Father,
Hear my prayer of confession and, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, move me to live a life of repentance throughout Lent and every day of my life. In Jesus' name.
