Bringing Out Their Best
Rev. Dwayne Lueck

And he (Abraham) was called a friend of God.  James 2:23

God encouraged Abraham and Abraham believed and trusted in God and did what was right and pleasing and was called God's friend.  God brought out Abraham's best.

School has started.  Parents and teachers are back at it, encouraging the children to do their best.  There is an acronym that I have seen that helps me as I work with people around the District to encourage people to do their best.  It is the BEST acronym.

Believe in them
Encourage them
Share with them
Trust them

A child wants to be encouraged.  We all want to be encouraged.  We all want to be nourished.  We can do this because of who we are as God's baptized people.  We have been blessed so we can be a blessing to others.  As the ministry season kicks off this fall, may we encourage each other as we undertake the Lord's business whether in the classroom, office or meeting room.

Scholarship Blessings

Did you know the North Wisconsin District annually distributes scholarship dollars donated for Concordia University church work students, seminary students, and students serving Camp Luther during the summer?  These dollars are not budgeted monies, but interest and principal from donor directed gifts.  31 Concordia students, 8 seminarians, and 10 student-summer staff received awards totaling nearly $110,000!  Want to be a part of this legacy?  Contact President Lueck at the District office.
COLLEGE STUDENTS

How do I find the closest Lutheran church for my student at college?

Andy Weden, campus pastor at Peace Campus Center (UW Stevens Point) said, "A phone call to the local congregation is always the best option.  (Click here for LCMS Church Locator)   If that doesn't work, I would direct them to the new LCMA home page and then to the "connect" tab.  (Click here for LCMA home page)  Simply fill out the information and the mission association will help in finding a church home for your student while they are away at college.  Another place to look is in the 2013 LUTHERAN ANNUAL pages 753-758.

CONCORDIA PLAN SERVICES CORNER

Health Insurance Marketplace Notice Now Available

As required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or health care reform law, employers will need to provide notification to their employees about the Health Insurance Marketplace that will be available in their state beginning October 1, 2013.

To assist employers with fulfilling this requirement, Concordia Plan Services has prepared a Health Insurance Marketplace modified Notice template designed for employers in the Concordia Health Plan (CHP). This template, along with instructions on how to complete the notice, is available on our website. You will find it at www.ConcordiaPlans.org under Healthcare > Health Care Reform News and Information > Publications and Resources.  the notice and instructions were also mailed to employers the week of August 19.

Employers will be required to provide a Notice to current employees (all full-time, part-time, and temporary workers) by October 1, and any new employee employed on or after that date. The employer must provide the Notice regardless of whether or not the employer offers health coverage. Employers that do not participate in the CHP can find model Notices provided by the Department of Labor at www.dol.gov/ebsa.

The purpose of the Notice is to provide the employee:

  • information about Marketplaces
  • how to request assistance in accessing the Marketplaces
  • a description of the availability of a Premium Tax Credit, or subsidy (if applicable), and
  • an explanation of the implications for employees if they decide to purchase a qualified health plan through a Marketplace.

Open enrollment for health insurance coverage through the Marketplace begins October 1 for coverage starting as early as January 1, 2014.

(Reminder: Open enrollment for the Concordia Health Plan runs September 23 through October 25.)

Video Series Explains "Pay or Play" Health Care Reform Mandate for Large Employers (Employers w/50 or more full-time equivalent employees.)

In an effort to keep you informed and aware of health plan changes as a result of health care reform, Concordia Plan Services has provided a video series for large employers (those with 50 or more full-time-equivalent employees).

The video series, entitled "Pay, Play, or Pray," explains what the employer can expect from the employer shared responsibility mandate known as "Pay or Play." While this legislation and its associated penalties have been delayed for one year - from January 1, 2014 to January 1, 2015 - we still encourage our large employers to become familiar with the regulations/requirements early so that they, if necessary, can start tracking the hours of variable-hour employees starting in 2014.

The "Pay or Play" mandate requires large employers to offer their full-time employees affordable health coverage that provides minimum value or pay a penalty. This video series will help you determine whether it will apply to your organization, and, if so, take steps to be in full compliance by January 1, 2015.

The video series was created by Quarles & Brady LLP in Milwaukee, Wis., for Concordia Plan Services. Attorney and Affordable Care Act expert, John Barlament, will take you through seven steps explaining the different components of the employer shared responsibility requirements. While 90 minutes in total length, we divided the full video into four parts, to break down the subject into digestible segments.

To view "Pay, Play, or Pray" go to www.ConcordiaPlans.org and click Healthcare > Health Care Reform News and Information > E-Learning Presentations and Videos

Quarles & Brady LLP has also made available a 70-page publication on the mandate. In the opening slides the viewer is instructed as to how to find this document on the law firm's website.

Tip Sheets Tackle Complex Health Care Reform Topics

Concordia Plan Services has created an informational series, "The Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Concordia Health Plan (CHP), "that features timely Tip Sheets designed to share information with our members and break-down the sometimes complex topics that make up the ACA.

Tip Sheets are available at www.ConcordiaPlans.org under Resources > Employer Resource Materials > Health Care Reform.  Tip Sheet #2 was also included in a mailing to employers the week of August 19.

CPS will continue to be a resource for you regarding ACA and your benefits through the Concordia Plans.  We are here to support you and your ministry through these changing times.  If you have any questions, please call our office toll free at 888-927-7526.
