LMI - HFJ Success

CONFIRMATION DAY

Rev. Dwayne Lueck

Recently I had the privilege of preaching at a church anniversary. The emphasis was the 'Confirmation Grand Reunion' and many returned for the celebration and many pictures were taken. This took place on Palm Sunday. That was the day, for many years, that confirmation took place. March 19, 1967 was the day of my confirmation it was on Palm Sunday-Easter was early that year too!

Maybe you recall your confirmation and maybe you received a hymnal with your name on it or a Bible-it was a big day. It was the day that you as a catechumen made a public confession of your faith after a period of thorough and extensive catechesis in the Small Catechism. It was the day you answered, "I do so by the grace of God", to the question: "Do you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and Church and to suffer all even death, rather than fall away from it?"

Whether you are the pastor asking the question, the person answering the question, or you are sitting in the pew hearing this-it is a serious question. It is a time of reflection for each of us if we are continuing "steadfast in this confession" that Jesus Christ is the Lord of our life each and every day-not just on Confirmation day.

As St Paul wrote: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 (ESV)

LMI - HFJ Success
The Sunday school at St. John's Lutheran Church recently participated in the 2013 Hearts for Jesus Mission project by raising awareness and funds for the Lutheran Malaria Initiative. We kicked the event off by showing the Sunday school video clips, power point presentations and other materials helping them to understand what malaria was and how they could help others through participating in Hearts for Jesus. After learning about the LMI, setting up the display in our fellowship hall and seeing what it would be like to have to sleep and play under a protective net, the kids decided that they would like to raise enough money to purchase 100 mosquito nets to protect children in Africa! I knew this would be a lofty goal for the 9 children in our Sunday school, but they were so excited and enthusiastic I was cer St John's Sunday School LMI Success! tain they would give it their best shot.
We made malaria banks and the kids faithfully filled them and returned them. We even had one little girl who took hers to a basketball game and asked her teachers and others to support the LMI. The kids made "mosquitoes" and sold them for $10 each, explaining to the congregation that each mosquito represented one net that would save the lives of children like them. For every $10 that was donated, a mosquito was hung on the net displayed in our fellowship hall.  The kids baked with their parents and grandparents and we had held a bake sale that would make anyone's mouth water.  The poem LISTEN that was provided by the LMI was very effective as all of the kids presented it in church.

Yesterday, we were $60.00 short of our goal.  The Sunday school children went up in front of the congregation to thank them for their awesome support for Hearts for Jesus.  They held up the check in the picture but the amount was not filled in.  Following the service, they handed out LMI bracelets, buttons and bookmarks to people who generously left a free will donation as they exited church.  Much to the surprise of the children, we raised 3x the amount needed.

We are overjoyed to present the NWD with a check in the amount of $1,120.00 for the Lutheran Malaria Initiative!!!

God's Blessings,

The Counseling Connection:
A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING
By Pastor Dan Kohn - District Counselor

It's quiz time. Name the men of the Bible who faced a crisis in their life. For starters we could list-Adam, Elijah, David, and Peter. Each of these men faced the vulnerable side of their humanity.

These four men also shared something else in common...indeed what is all-too -common for man. At their point of crisis, none of these men sought counsel. What Scripture reveals is four, vulnerable men who faced their crisis alone--by their choice.

Here we find a misunderstanding that is common to man. At the time of personal crisis, do not seek outside counsel. There is an irony as such times of fragility-seeking outside help is presumed to be a sign of weakness. This is a misinterpretation more common to the male gender.

So at the "crisis crossroads" we find these responses from our four men-

+Adam hid and found fig leaves for cover (Genesis 3:7-8).

            +Elijah sought death (1 Kings 19:4)

            +David devised a political cover-up (2 Samuel 11:6-15)

            +Peter wept bitterly (Matthew 26:75)

What a difference it would have made if these men had chosen not to fight their spiritual battle alone. We need to consider the inspired words of wise King Solomon (another leader with a vulnerable side who could have used his own advice)-

"Let the wise hear and increase in learning,

and the one who understands obtain guidance."

                                                         (Proverbs 1:5)

Interwoven within those words of counsel is the underlying understanding the even the wise can benefit from outside guidance. Yes, even well-trained pastors would do well to heed such advice.

From another vantage point consider this. Mankind created the "Lone Ranger" and "Superman;" God didn't. It was God who created Adam, Elijah, David, and Peter-all who would have benefited from wise counsel in their time of need. We pastors need to heed this same reality.
