Creating opportunities for all to thrive

         e-Touch                                                                     August 2014

LaDonnaOver 100 attendees at the August 12th Learning for a Lifetime event witnessed the exciting impact a community that's learned how to work together can make for learners at all stages in life.

And, on August 26th supporters and volunteers made possible the distribution of back-to-school supplies for nearly 700 children of our community! Amazing! This matters. A lot.

Actually, we never cease to be amazed by the timely and generous response of this community to what matters most.

If you are looking for ways to stay with this exciting venture, here are a couple for you to consider. Volunteers are needed for:

The Preschool Literacy Program - Storytime Matters. Adult Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups to help develop foundational literacy skills. Training provided. October-May commitment, 1-2 times/week for 1-2 hours.

Homework Helpers - provide homework help and academic support for youth living in apartment neighborhoods served by CONECT. Adult and mature high school student volunteers welcome. 1.5 hours/week, September-December or January-May.

To volunteer, contact Lynn Vettel or Liz Erstad-Hicks by email or phone at 763-489-7506.

Thank you, friends!! Imagine what we can do together!

Learning for a Lifetime

Thank you to everyone who attended the Aug. 12 Learning for a Lifetime event. And a special thanks to BMO Harris Bank for serving as the presenting sponsor.

More than 100 people attended to learn more about educational programs that span cradle-to-career and help families at all stages of life.

A special highlight was a rap composed by IOCP Case Manager Kai Andersen, which was inspired by kids in our leadership club.

The Learning for a Lifetime campaign runs through the end of the month. It's not too late to make a donation to support these worthwhile programs. Please consider making a gift now!

Wayzata Rotary Club Battles Hunger

Thank you to the Wayzata Rotary Club for a $2,000 grant in support of the Healthy Break Project to provide food for children while school is not in session. As part of the project, members volunteered to prepare breakfast for children served by our CONECT program. Rotarians also packed up bags of healthy food for the children to take home. This ensured they received healthy meals in the time between the end of Camp CONECT and the beginning of school. We greatly appreciate your support of kids in our community!

Graft's Grill Raises $2,000

Graft's Grill, a business learning experience for students in grades 6-8 through the West Suburban Summer School, was a huge success! Kids learned how a small business operates and put their learning into action when they helped run Peg's Countryside Caf for one evening. They raised a total of $2,000 for IOCP's Food Shelf!

This wonderful project is held in memory of Suzanne Graft, beloved teacher at Oakwood Elementary, who passed away in 2010. The program was originally created by Suzanne and later brought back after her death. Graft's Grill continues on because of Suzanne's strong belief in the potential of children.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gloria and George Hogland

Gloria and husband George are longtime food shelf volunteers at IOCP. They continue to contribute their time and talents not only out of a desire to help the community but also in order to keep busy. "I feel strongly about giving back," Gloria said. "I want something tangible to do... I think you're healthier, I think you're in a better place" when you volunteer. A huge thanks to Gloria and George for your many years of service!

Mission
The mission of IOCP is to engage the heart and will of the community to respond to emergency needs and create opportunities for all to thrive.
