We're Off to a
Strong Start!

Our first month back with FLOW has been filled with lots of amazing activities and bonding opportunities for all of our student Mentees and Mentors. We have many wonderful, dedicated Mentors and Site Leaders returning for another year with us -- and for that we are truly grateful! We are extremely excited for all of the new Mentors and Site Leaders who have come on board this year-we know that you will add exciting energy to all of
our FLOW programs!

THANK YOU in advance for making this regular commitment of time and energy to your student Mentee.

You ARE making a difference!

Setting the Stage for Great Relationships!
Our Amazing FLOW Community

Mentees and Mentors at Mechanicsville Elementary focused on collaboration and team building during their first sessions of the year! During one of their sessions, MES FLOW mentees worked with their mentors to create a new object that would reflect one of their character traits.  Pictured above is one of their mentors describing  his desk chair with a monitoring system that automatically reminds him of appointments/tasks to complete! His mentee created a bed that he could travel anywhere which exemplifies his character trait of laziness!

During another session, the MES FLOW group worked on a team building activity with a hula hoop which required the children to work together to move a hula hoop through the group without losing contact.

Mechnicsville Elementary's program is off to a great start of building positive and lasting relationships!

Top 25 Mentoring

Relationships in History

Many of the most influential people in American history were impacted by having a positive mentoring relationship. This article provides a list of the Top 25 most meaningful relationships-such an inspirational read!

Mentors are a Game Changer!

60,000 college graduates shared how the role of a mentor impacted their academic life and overall well-being. Researchers found that those graduates who felt supported during college had a higher rate of being engaged in their work as well as their overall well-being. A great article to showcase how what you do now as a mentor will impact the life of your mentee for many years to come!

Some FAQs about FLOW Mentoring.

Why mentoring?
Because it works! Educational research has shown that mentoring is extremely effective in increasing academic performance and positive social interactions among young people. And you asked for it! Nine years ago, the most common request to the Department of Academic Support was for a quality mentoring program. We worked hard to develop and implement a school based mentoring program that meets the needs of our students here in St. Mary's County Public School-and we're proud to say we've been at it for eight years!

Who are the Mentors?

How are they selected?

Our dedicated roster of Mentors come from all over Southern Maryland with hugely diverse backgrounds.  Many are business professionals and military personnel.  Others are school staff members, parents, grandparents, secondary students, college students, retired citizens, and other caring and responsible community members.   They have all submitted applications, been screened, and have gone through Mentor Training before they begin to work with their student mentee.

When and where does
the mentoring take place?

Mentoring takes place after school once a week for an hour and a half at the student's home school. This ensures that students do not miss any part of their academic day.

How are the student mentees selected?

At each school, the FLOW Site Leader consults with teachers, counselors, administrators, the nurse, and other staff to develop a list of students that are most likely to benefit from the program.

How can I apply?

To apply to become a Mentor with FLOW Mentoring, we require that you complete a FLOW Mentoring Mentor Application and an SMCPS Volunteer Application (this is required of all volunteers in our school system).

Please click on the links below to view printable versions of each application.
