If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.

RISE TO THE CHALLENGE!

News from Great Mills High School

Last month the FLOW/Basketball 4 LYFE group of Great Mills High School put on a big RISE TO THE CHALLENGE eventFamilies, youth, members of the school system and military all came together in support of wounded soldiers, military personnel and veterans and began the event with a fun NAVY (PAX River) vs. St. Mary's County Public School game.  RISE TO THE CHALLENGE was organized to raise education awareness in Southern Maryland. Representatives from various post-high school institutions were there to talk with students about their programs (institutions included:  St. Mary's College of Maryland, John Hopkins, Bowie State, College of Southern Maryland, the Marines, George Washington, Year Up, Georgetown, etc.) The pictures below include photos of the game and FLOW/Basketball 4 LYFE group, as well as some of the event's volunteers.

WHAT IS FLOW?
WATCH THE LES VIDEO TO FIND OUT!

Site Leaders Evelyn Sweeney and Maggie Giles and their `FLOW Group at Leonardtown Elementary School produced a wonderful short video about FLOW Mentoring. In it, the mentors and mentees ask and answer questions about what FLOW means, what it involves, and what they like about weekly sessions.

Please click on the link below which will take you to the video on the FLOW Mentoring webpage:

In one recent session, the FLOW group did an engineering project, building bridge trusses.  The activity was arranged by the daughter of one of the Mentors. During another session, the students produced their own videos about bullying.

OES FLOW did some new and exciting things this past month...
Miss Kristin, a Zumba Instructor, visited the group and led them through a Zumbatomic performance on stage.   Another session, the group made kale salad; some of the students tried kale and red pepper for the first time - and liked it!

FLOW students took a field trip to St Mary's College of Maryland on May 9.  From cafeteria to gym, the students walked all around campus and got a good taste of college life!

Greenview Knolls Elementary
Mentors and mentees had huge fun designing special T-shirts to be worn by Mentees on Fridays; Fridays are the school spirit day when they wear something green or something with an owl.

Dynard Elementary
To celebrate Earth Day, Dynard FLOW decided to help out with one of Dynard's Green School Best Management Practices. The practice they chose was Habitat Restoration. Dynard's schoolyard habitat consists of a rain garden, school forest, and a newly planted meadow. FLOW students added native plants to the rain garden, planted sunflower seeds in the meadow, and added several bird houses and feeders to the school forest.
On a separate session the group decorated/painted clay pots and then filled them with a beautiful flower plant to surprise Mom on Mother's Day.

Federal Support for Quality Programs
In two separate letters, leaders of national youth mentoring organizations, as well as members of the U.S. House of Representatives, have asked that $100 million be included in the federal fiscal year 2014 budget for the U.S. Department of Justice's Youth Mentoring Grants program.

For more information about why funding for these programs is so critical, read the Mentor: National Mentoring Partnership's

The Numbers Add Up!

The Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota, a MENTOR affiliate, just released new data from a survey of 74 mentoring programs across the state."Minnesota is a strong mentoring state. We are proud there are 41,000 mentors and nearly 200,000 youth being mentored across the state. We've seen time and again that both youth and adults benefit from quality mentoring relationships," said Joellen Gonder-Spacek, executive director of the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM). "However, there is a great need in our state for more adults, men in particular, to serve as mentors to the youth in our communities."
