These winter weeks have been busy for FLOW programs. Despite the snow, our mentors and mentees have had some special outings and events and they've continued to do many fun classroom activities. Throughout all of it, they've been enjoying some important times of connection.
Those of us behind the scenes love hearing about how these relationships are developing and strengthening: it's just what this program is all about!
Thank you to all of you who've put your heart and soul into making this program a success. We couldn't do it without you.

Thanks to all who turned out for the St. Mary's College of MD Seahawks basketball game!
It was huge fun to gather so many members of the FLOW Mentoring community together in support and celebration of our own FLOW program and National Mentoring Month.

Congratulations to our two Middle School T-Shirt Design Contest Winners!! The annual Middle School FLOW t-shirt design contest was held last November. Submissions were gathered from all the middle schools, and judges Theo Cramer and Mark Smith chose the winning design from among a number of fabulous entries.
Congratulations go out to Monesha and Krista, pictured above, of Spring Ridge Middle School, the co-designers and joint winners of this year's competition. They were presented with certificates in acknowledgement of their achievement and were the first students to receive their T-shirts.

Please note: Our FLOW middle and high school programs are funded through a grant from OJJDP. These funds allow us to host this contest and provide t-shirts for our middle school programs. Every year we look for donations from non-profits and individuals interested in supporting the same opportunity for our elementary programs. Unfortunately, we did not get these funds this year.

On February 2, a large group of middle and high school FLOW participants went up on buses to DC to see the Georgetown Hoyas take on the St. John's Red Storm at the Verizon Center. Word is it was a great game and everyone had a fabulous time!

650 youth mentoring advocates for the 2013 National Mentoring Summit, "I am not a statistic. I am a story."
Introduction of the Peace First Prize
Eric Dawson is the president and co-founder of Peace First, a non-profit organization and national movement organized to celebrate young people and their potential to create positive change around them. At the Mentoring Summit, Dawson introduced the Peace First Prize, a prize which Dawson referred to as the "Nobel Peace Prize for Young People" and one which will recognize meaningful peacemaking work that creates lasting good in a community, neighborhood or school. It offers $50,000 fellowships to five recipients to continue their peacemaking work. MENTOR is one of 20 national sponsors and partners for this initiative. click here to read about it |
