President Obama proclaims January 2013 as National Mentoring Month
"Our American family is bound together by caring individuals who make it their mission to serve others. During National Mentoring Month, we pay special tribute to the men and women who enrich the lives of our young people and fortify the unbreakable bonds between one generation and the next.
"Mentors know that helping a child unlock their full potential begins with care, guidance, and support - which is why my Administration is proud to celebrate mentorship nationwide through programs that help young people see the strength within themselves..."

Established in 2002, National Mentoring Month (NMM) celebrates mentoring and the
- Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms.
- Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young people.
- Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring.
Key dates for National Mentoring Month 2013 are:
- January 10 - "I Am a Mentor" social media day. Join the conversation on Facebook, and/or use other social media to further the goals of NMM.
- January 17 - Thank Your Mentor Day™. Honor someone who was/is a personal mentor. For example, contact him/her to express appreciation, become a mentor to a young person in the community or make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program.
- January 21 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Honor and recruit mentors by participating in community service. For example, sponsor and organize a single service project, form teams to volunteer or encourage friends, colleagues and families to seek out service projects in their hometowns.
- January 24 and 25 - National Mentoring Summit in Washington, D.C. The Summit will bring together more than 650 leading youth-serving organizations, along with government, civic, research and corporate leaders to evaluate best program models, examine new research, project future developments in the field and fundamentally ensure that more youth receive quality mentoring throughout America.
The 2013 Theme is "Mentoring Works!"

FLOW Mentoring in Action *****************************
Dynard Elementary
FLOW Mentees at DES worked the food and drink station for their PTA Winter Dance on December 14th. Lots of burgers, fries, funnel cakes, and drinks were sold. They did an awesome job and raised over $400 to put toward FLOW activities and supplies! The FLOW group also held a Holiday Social on December 17th. They were joined by parents of both Mentees and Mentors, as well as a few staff members. They sang an original song, "The 12 Days of FLOW," created by Director Mr. Cox and sung to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Mentor Brent Demirkan played the guitar to accompany them. Mentees were wearing lovely new FLOW T-shirts made by Mrs. Polo and her family. They had entertainment, delicious cookies, fun crafts -- in all, a wonderful FLOW Holiday Social!

MENTOR Partners with Lady Gaga to Bring Movement to the Streets
The Born This Way Foundation announced today that it will launch the Born Brave Bus Tour, which will join Lady Gaga on the road for the U.S. leg of her Born This Way Ball tour. The pre-concert "tailgate" will provide a space for young people, ages 13-25, to gather and celebrate their individuality in a safe arena where everyone is encouraged to be the person they were born to be. The Born Brave Bus Tour will allow youth to get more deeply involved in the Born This Way Foundation movement while also connecting them with local resources in their communities in an effort to inspire bravery and promote self-acceptance.
