FLOW STUDENTS IN SERVICE:
Many of our school FLOW programs have been energetically engaged in service activities in the past weeks and months. Here are some of them:
- The Spring Ridge Middle School FLOW group made blankets to offer as Christmas gifts to patients in the PICU at Johns Hopkins.
- Dynard Elementary FLOW sold Candy Grams to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims in New York and New Jersey.
- George Washington Carver Elementary FLOW participants were involved in a gardening project in which they grew vegetables and greens to be donated to a local food pantry (more below).
- Hollywood Elementary FLOW took a trip to a Lexington Park food pantry to help prepare bags of food for needy families at Thanksgiving.
- Three schools - Green Holly Elementary, Chesapeake Public Charter School, and Mechanicsville Elementary - teamed up for a penny drive, with money sent to The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims.
Lynne Baker, our site leader who organized the penny drive, reports that her Green Holly FLOW students raised $650.00!! Congratulations!!!!
See below for pictures of her students at the start of the penny drive and at its successful end!
You will see pictures of other FLOW groups involved in their service activities below!!

Spring Ridge Middle School
The FLOW group at Spring Ridge has been making blankets to send to the PICU at John Hopkins for Christmas.

FLOW sessions have been varied and active these past weeks at GKES. In one, mentees attempted to bridge the generational divide by teaching their mentors some tips on the use of a Promethean (Smart) board. At another, mentors assisted mentees in making special invitations for their families to attend a holiday celebration on December 10. They were also busy celebrating the season by making festive wooden ornaments.
The final pictures are scenes from the holiday party: happy cookie-decorating and cookie-eating, with several special guest-parents getting to partake!
*****************************
Every year since the beginning of the FLOW program, Hollywood Elementary mentors and mentees have made a visit to the Food Pantry at the Church of the Ascension in Lexington Park where they have helped Mr. Jess Davis sort food and decorate bags. The bags are given out to needy families at Thanksgiving. The group worked hard this year, and when the work was done, they all went out to dinner together at McDonalds.
In an earlier session, mentees and mentors got messy with some pumpkin carving!
*****************************
Dynard Elementary
The FLOW group at DES recently spent sessions making magnetic clothespin turkeys and posters promoting Candy Gram Sales -- all money was sent to the American Red Cross to help families in New York and New Jersey affected by Hurricane Sandy.
FLOW Mentees participated in the Dynard News Morning Announcements reminding the community to buy Candy Grams to help the families in need.
