City Speak

by Jonathan Stephens
City Church Elder

I have a secret. A Thanksgiving peeve that I need to confess. I hate the "30 days of thanks" that every other person on your social media feed does. I don't really have a good reason for it but I just do. I thought about how I could "Jesus Juke" the situation and say something like, "we should be thankful year round and not just when a month comes around," but honestly, it has nothing to do with anything spiritual at all. I just felt the need to share that shortcoming with you guys. In honor of, and inspired by, the lists of thanks that I love so much, I'm going to make my own list of things that I'm thankful for about City Church:

1. The vision is clear - It doesn't take long from when you walk in the front door to understand what City Church is about. In a world of ambiguity, City Church could not be clearer with its vision to be for the Gospel and for the
City of Tallahassee.

2. The Staff - These people make City Church run. I could dedicate an entire City Speak to the staff here and still not list half of what they do. I think what makes me the most encouraged by them though, is how "bought in" they are to the mission of City Church and how they truly live and model the vision.

3. Church isn't about "us" - This is one of the most foreign concepts in so many churches, sadly. And I am certainly guilty of having this mindset at one time. One of City Church's core values says, "The church does not exist for us. We are the church and we exist for the world. Saved people, serve people." It wasn't until I came to City Church that I realized that Church wasn't just so I could get "recharged" or ease some guilt but rather to serve others and my community by showing the love of Christ through the Gospel.

4. We do everything with excellence - If you have ever spent much time with Matthew Robinson you know he likes to do things well. That's a good thing, Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, " Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength..." City Church really takes that seriously and it shows with the level of preparation put in to each and every aspect of the Sunday experience. When you think of it in terms of how important the message being presented on Sundays is, it's easy to see why Dean, Matthew, Alex, Todd, Alexis and every team leader treats every Sunday as if lives depend on it......... because they do.

The truth of the matter is, I do have a lot to be thankful for and probably could learn a lesson by sharing what I'm thankful for with the world more often. The source of all I have to be thankful for is God the Father! So as you read this, on or around Thanksgiving, remember that we are commanded to not just "count" our blessings from God but to be good stewards with His blessings. Jesus said that ".... much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more. " Luke 12:48
