City Speak

by Kyle Hartmann

As a husband and father, it is my responsibility to lead my family in a manner that will glorify God.  I have to lift my wife up, serve her and lead her in many aspects of our life including our faith in God, our finances, how we raise our children and the business we run together.  Being a father, I have to set an example of how to live a Christian life to my girls, teach them about Jesus and his gift to us, and finally how to make good decisions.  However, there have been many times where I have failed in all of these areas.  I get caught up in what I want, what my desires are and do what I want.

As I sit here writing this CitySpeak, I keep looking at the passage I have on my wall: "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act"  (Psalm 37:5).  How many times in our lives do we look to ourselves for the ability to guide our lives.  I'm 37 years old and there have been too many significant times in my life where I have relied on myself, my wishes, my desires, and not God.  Every time I get in a rhythm of doing what I want, or I put myself first, things start to crumble quickly.  When we put ourselves in front of God and other people, that is where we get the wake up call that this is not the plan God intended for us.  His plan for us is to live for others in the way the Bible teaches, to give Him our worries and to have faith that His plan is good.

Many years ago, I really decided to do dedicate myself to that verse.  I realized that I can't handle it all.  I can't do everything right.  I'm not going to be the best at everything I door control what I want to control.  And guess what.  That is OK.  I'm going to fail at some things.  Maybe even big things.  And in the years since, my life has become so much better.  My stress level has decreased because I am not putting my faith in me, I'm putting it in God.

When I left my job in 2007 and Stacy and I started our business, I was scarred.  I was scared because I was normally pretty good at controlling what I wanted to control and I didn't know if I would be able to hold onto that.  However, after having a really crappy day after starting the business, I knew what I needed to do.  I needed to put my pride aside and give God control.  I prayed that day and gave Him control and asked for His plan; I promised to use this business to bless other people and glorify Him.  From that point in, I put Him in the control seat.  Do I work hard, yes.  However, it is God that is in the control seat of our business and my life.  Knowing I don't have to rely on my plan is very peaceful and gives me freedom.  God has a plan for my life and my family and I trust that it is good.  It couldn't it be stated any better than in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

No one said life would be easy, in fact, it is pretty hard at times. But, God gives us the gift of giving it to him to worry about.  Prayer and faith are the tools he provides to us to manage this gift.  No one can take that away from you.  When you accept Jesus, you have those tools for eternity.  It is our job to use them and master them and I'm proud to call CITYCHURCH the place where I hone those tools!
