City Church
October 17th, 2013 | volume 6 | issue 42

What is truth? Is there truth? If so, how should our lives be shaped by the truth? These aren't new questions. In fact, nearly two thousand years ago the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to his close friend and associate, Timothy, to address these very same issues. Today we refer to that letter as First Timothy. In these letters, Paul's overriding concern is with the truth of Jesus Christ - that it be faithfully protected, lived out and handed on.

This Sunday, we'll continue to go through the book of 1 Timothy in our series "Coach 'Em Up" this Sunday. We'll see you at the Tallahassee Mall at 9:30 or 11:00 a.m.!

City Speak

by Emily Lewis

"What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." James 4:14

I've always admired God's sense of humor; to think that these words he had inspired were not only relatable to people thousands of years ago but also applicable to each of us today. Like many other college students I constantly contemplate what my role in this thing called life might be and if my role or plan for the future will have any impact outside of the realm of a solid paycheck that can keep me fed and sheltered. If you have been attending City Church for any amount of time you have probably heard the phrase "called not employed" escape Dean's mouth more than once, but have you ever really sat back and thought about what that meant to you.

In this season of my life I am called to be a student but I have come to this understanding: I will not let the four walls of a classroom or the curriculum of one professor limit my education. I'm looking for God everywhere because He is the greatest teacher, His plan for my life far surpasses any dreams I could selfishly develop. If my life really is just a mist then I want that mist to permeate the lives of everyone I come in contact with and I want that mist to nurture growth within myself and within others. What has God called me to do? What has God called you to do? Whether He has called you to be a teacher, a doctor, an avid volunteer, a musician, a parent, or innumerable other possibilities, the point is He has called. He's calling, He's knocking on your heart and He is waiting for you to be brave enough to let him in. Let God change your life. At a mere nineteen years of age I can confidently tell you that He's changed mine.

I live each and every day for the adventure: the adventure that is opening my eyes every morning to a beautiful sunrise, that is being able to stand on my own two feet and walk to my classes, that is WHATEVER God has in store for me. I challenge myself to "lean not on my own understanding" and what a blessing it has been to let the Creator of the universe into my heart and into my eternal plans. This past summer God had me walk the walk. For five weeks, he placed me in the capital of Croatia, formerly a part of communist Yugoslavia, to change lives. Little did I know that one of lives that would be changing would be my own. I learned something new about who I was, who God was, and how we fit together every single day. He had me love on Roma gypsy kids that didn't know what three meals a day looked like, let alone what the Gospel is. I played alongside dozens of kids in multiple villages and although neither of us could understand the words that came out of each other's mouths the language of love knows no bounds and Christ's love was so abundant that words were not necessary to impact each other.

Fast forward two months and now you see me feverishly typing this out behind a desk at City Church. How God pulled me from the impoverished villages in Croatia and placed me into City Church Kids is beyond me but this is yet another adventure I'm stoked to be on. I challenge you to let Him give you an adventure, let him change your life.

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

(Emily is a Florida native from Boca Raton but now calls Tallahassee her second home. She is currently a sophomore at The Florida State University where she is studying Retail Merchandising and Product Development. God, missions, her family and her sorority hold a big piece of her heart but she also enjoys a good book or film and loves to dance. She started attending City Church last fall and now serves as an intern in City Church Kids.)
