God has given us two distinct paths to walk in life. The life of wisdom, and the life of the fool. In our new series, "Walk The Line," we will be looking at how a relationship with Jesus Christ will allow us to walk the line of wisdom in every area of our lives.
We hope you can join us at our 10:30 a.m. service with a special performance by all of our kids from Kids Camp!

"The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent." - Exodus 14:14 (ESV)
I remember reading this verse during my last year of college as I was going through the Exodus account in the Old Testament. I remember being struck by its simplicity and its power. At that time, I was walking through a dark period in my life where I was fighting against paralyzing doubt about my future and unbearable guilt about sin in my life. God's words, as spoken through Moses, both humbled and encouraged me during this hard time. Presently, this verse is a source of comfort and wisdom to my husband Jim and myself as we are entering into the "unknown" in terms of work/financial situations.
In the Bible, this short but poignant verse comes at a climatic time in the story of redemption when God was using Moses to lead His people out of Egypt into the Promised Land. To be more specific, this verse occurs directly before God commands Moses to lift up his staff and divide the Red Sea so that the Israelites could pass safely (Exodus 14:15-31). While we may be quite familiar with this story, it is easy to gloss over the impact of verse 14.
What I love about this verse is the juxtaposition between God's active fighting for us versus this-seemingly passive response on our part. We see this fight most clearly with Jesus fighting for us on the cross and overcoming death. In our past, present, and future, God has gone and will go before us no matter what kind of "battle" we are entering. On the contrary, we have only to be silent. That sounds simple enough to my fellow introverts, right? However, this is not a verse written to extroverted social butterflies; rather, it is written to us all. In our most private thoughts, we constantly tell ourselves lies from Satan. In essence, we must actively choose to be passive and let God fight our battles.
(Today, you can find Merry Beth teaching students French at Florida State University as a Masters student in the Department of French Literature. She has been married to her sweetest, most hilarious, and most handsome husband, Jim Low for four and a half years. Both Merry Beth and Jim love playing soccer in the community and hanging out with friends from City Church.)
