God has given us two distinct paths to walk in life. The life of wisdom, and the life of the fool. In our new series, "Walk The Line," we will be looking at how a relationship with Jesus Christ will allow us to walk the line of wisdom in every area of our lives.
We hope you can join us at our 10:30 a.m. service at the Tallahassee Mall as we continue our study in the book of Proverbs.

City Speak
"But [the Lord] said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9
I'm about to call myself out. You know what I am absolutely terrible at? Giving grace, undeserved and unearned favor. I'm so much better at giving people what they actually deserve. Treat me well, and I'll treat you well. Work hard and give your best every day, and I'll certainly return the favor. On the other hand, if someone else's incompetent effort leads to myself looking bad or my hard work going unnoticed? My reaction is not pleasant. Rather, it's regularly convicting, brash, unmerciful, and grace-less.
In other words, I far to often act no differently than someone who has never even heard of Jesus.
Why do I choose to give people what they deserve rather than give this unmerited favor of grace? I think it's because in that moment making the choice, I believe I should get what I deserve. But oh, what a foolish thought that truly is, for what does the Bible say about what I actually deserve?
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" ~ Romans 3:23
"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins" ~ Ephesians 2:1
Ultimately, my own merit, my own effort, yields me nothing in return but death and eternal separation from God. But thankfully, Jesus is so unlike me. Jesus is grace-full. He disregarded what he deserved (all glory/honor/power in heaven enthroned with the Father) to descend to earth as a man, and then he disregarded what he deserved again to pay the penalty for my sin and yours by dying in our place.
Wonderfully, joyfully, beautifully, those verses I just shared continue with a gracious theme: "All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus" ~ Romans 3:24"The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" ~ Romans 6:23"[God] made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved" ~ Ephesians 2:5 Jesus Christ is grace-full. Those actively following him will be the same. When our focus shifts from ourselves to our Savior, to his grace and his completed work of dying on the cross in our place for our sins, our response must be to exude that same undeserved and unearned favor to the world.
Tullian Tchividjian calls grace "descending, one-way love". I can think of no better way for us as Christ-followers to prove to the world we believe Jesus than to recklessly abandon what we deserve by showing love to those who don't deserve it, just as Christ himself did for us.
(Dave wrote this City Speak because he needs to hear it. A lot. Over and over again. He has been attending City Church since coming to Tallahassee in January 2010. Don't judge him for wearing make up every so often because he regularly finds himself under the stuido lights at WTXL ABC27 as the station's weekend sports anchor and weekday sports reporter. The way to his heart is a peach tea and Italian hoagie from Wawa or a cheesesteak from Geno's. You can get in touch with him on Twitter: @Dave_ABC27)
