January is the Time - WI Smoking Cessation Programs H

Holiday stress might influence some people to continue or resume smoking. However, one expert says many smokers think about quitting during the holidays. "For everyone who's thinking about using the holidays as a time to quit, it's a wonderful gift to yourselves and your family." Dr. Michael Fiore is the founder and director of the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI). He explains, there is help out there for anyone who wants to quit smoking.

Fiore says a live counselor will help every step of the way, developing a personal quit plan. "They'll send you some self-help materials to work at home and they'll even send you two weeks of free nicotine patch, gum, or lozenges to help get you started." He also suggests smokers consult with their doctor for even more help in kicking the habit. About 18 percent of adults in Wisconsin are smokers, which is down percent from 2012. Click here or visit http://www.ctri.wisc.edu/quitline.html for more info.

See the award winning film that looks at, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which "May be the most widespread, misunderstood and potentially dangerous epidemic that most people hardly know anything about." The screening is demand-driven so in order for the theater to be secured, a certain amount of tickets must be sold. WI School Wellness Blog H

The Wisconsin School Wellness Learning Collaborative began with a vision that schools could create healthier environments for their students and staff if they involved the community and worked together with other schools. The Learning Collaborative created opportunities for schools to learn from state and national experts in school wellness and to also learn from each other. Healthier students make better learners, but they can also decrease their risk for many chronic diseases, including cancer. Wisconsin schools are working hard to create healthier school environments. The WI CCC Program has developed a platform to share stories, resources and best practices throughout the state - the WI School Wellness blog. Please check it out, share it among your networks and be sure sign up for updates on the homepage.
