Breakthrough Silicon Valley Summer Program

July 1, 2013 - August 9, 2013

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, students who are the first in their family to go to college end poverty in their family lines forever. For 200 San Jos middle school students, the path to a college degree starts this July 1st at Breakthrough Silicon Valley. Breakthrough's transformative two-pronged program launches disadvantaged middle school students on the path to college, while at the same time inspiring high school and college students to become educators, particularly in the communities that need the most help. We are excited to announce that this year Breakthrough has expanded to east San Jos. Evergreen Valley High School, one of two Breakthrough Summer Program sites, is generously hosting them this summer. Breakthrough stands out among the many efforts to improve educational outcomes for underserved students, reaching beyond the typical goals of proficiency and deeply changing the lives of individuals and their communities. While ambitious in its goals, Breakthrough works: a stunning 96% of Breakthrough students attend four-year colleges and 78% of Breakthrough intern teachers enter careers in education.

How do they do it? Breakthrough operates as an out-of-school time organization, providing summer and after school academic enrichment and college guidance. A typical student's six-year Breakthrough journey (from 7th through 12th grade) includes:

  • An academic summer session for seven hours a day over six weeks after their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years - giving them the opportunity to catch up to their more affluent peers.
  • After school math classes during their middle school years
  • High school placement counseling and course selection guidance
  • Regular grade monitoring and targeted tutoring
  • Exposure to college-educated professionals and Silicon Valley workplaces
  • Intensive college counseling to navigate the complex college application process

To learn more about Breakthrough Silicon Valley, visit their website at www.breakthroughsv.org or contact Christina Castro, Breakthrough Silicon Valley Communications Coordinator, at [email protected].

A Guide to Summer Learning and Activities

Summer learning loss is a huge problem and a significant contributor to the achievement gap. Most children lose an average of one month of skills but the numbers for low income families are much higher. In order to help combat this, the City of San Jos and Santa Clara County Office of Education in partnership with EdJigsaw have developed San Jos Beyond the Bell.

San Jos Beyond the Bell is an online tool to help parents connect to the best out of school programs for their child. Parents can search online for camps, museums, and events in their local area. The website also has a summer learning guide to help parents think about what they can do over the summer to ensure that learning continues outside of school and a list of programs that are free and offer financial aid.
