Superior Court of California Santa Clara County Seeks Volunteers for Civil Grand Jury

Deadline: Friday, March 22, 2013

 

The County of Santa Clara Superior Court is seeking volunteers to serve on the 2013-2014 Civil Grand Jury. The Civil Grand Jury is an investigatory body created for the protection of society and the enforcement of the law. The Grand Jury may examine all aspects of county and city government and special districts to ensure that the best interests of Santa Clara County citizens are being served.

Safe Summer Initiative Grant Application

Deadline: Tuesday, March 26, 2013, 4:00 p.m. 

 

Since 2008, the Mayor and City Council have annually approved funding for the Safe Summer Initiative Grant (SSIG) program. The intent of the SSIG program is to provide and/or enhance recreational and/or educational opportunities not normally available to high-risk and gang-impacted youth during the summer months, therefore providing a safe environment for youth while keeping them active and engaged in pro-social activities.

 

Total funding availability is yet to be determined, but applications requesting $1,000 to $8,000 will be accepted. The Safe Summer Initiative Grant Application can be found in WebGrants and an optional application workshop is scheduled for March 8th at 9:00 a.m. at Bascom Community Center, located at 1000 S. Bascom Ave.

The City of San Jos� is looking at new ways to bill for Recycle Plus garbage and recycling services to replace the current, outdated City-operated system. This survey is for residential property owners with curbside cart service; the billing change would not affect customers with dumpster service. Your opinions are valued and will help the City make an informed decision. You may take the survey in English, Spanish, or Vietnamese. Two Airlines Announce Plans to Launch SJC-LAX Service

On February 4th, Virgin America announced plans to begin service at Mineta San Jos� International Airport with four daily flights to Los Angeles starting May 1st. Virgin America will operate the 149-person modern Airbus A320 aircraft, which also offers first-class seating.

 

Delta Airlines has also announced that it will resume its service between San Jos� and Los Angeles starting June 10th. Delta, which previously served this market until 2008, will fly four daily nonstop flights on 65-passenger Canadair CR-700 regional jets.

2013 State of the City Address

 

Mayor Chuck Reed recognized recipients of 2012 Pride of San Jos� Awards, along with honorees from each of the Council Districts, at the 2013 State of the City that took place on the evening of February 7th at the San Jos� Civic Auditorium. Additionally, in Mayor Chuck Reed's seventh State of the City address, he outlined his priorities for San Jos� as the city begins to turn the corner on its fiscal problems. With savings from pension reforms and potential new revenues in the next two years, Mayor Reed said that San Jos� will be able to increase its police force by 200 additional officers and begin to restore other critical services in the coming years.

Mail-in and fax registration is also an option and is processed in the order they are received. Conveniently located in your neighborhood, community centers offer a wide variety of affordable and accessible classes for the whole family to enjoy. Crime Prevention Tips - Burglary

 

The most important thing you can do is call the police to report a crime or any suspicious activity. You have to be the eyes of your neighborhood and remember you can always remain a pair of anonymous eyes!

 

Light up your residence, lock your doors at all times, and call the police when you see something suspicious. More tips on how to prevent burglary are featured on the San Jos� Police Department website.

Silicon Valley Reads 2013

 

Now in its eleventh year, the Silicon Valley Reads program, presented by the Santa Clara County Library

District, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and the San Jos� Public Library Foundation, has become a staple throughout Santa Clara County. This year's featured books are "The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life That Follows" by Brain Castner and "Minefields of the Heart" by Sue Diaz. Companion books for children are also available. Thirty-eight events will take place at a San Jos� Public Library near you and other programs are occurring at venues around the county. Events range from book discussions groups, to meet and greets with the authors as well as events for children and families. The program is designed to promote reading and literacy, broaden the exposure to and appreciation of good literature, and build community.

Project Hired Employment Opportunities

 

Project HIRED is a nonprofit organization established in 1978 with a mission "to assist individuals with disabilities to gain and sustain employment, in partnerships with business and the community." Project HIRED has just been awarded a subcontract as a staffing partner to assist with staffing 500 plus IT Services positions in Seaside, CA. These positions will support the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) for the Departmetn of Defense. These employment opportunities are being offered under the President's AbilityOne Program (www.abilityone.org), a set-aside program designed to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Minimum Wage Ordinance


The Minimum Wage Ordinance was passed by City of San Jos� voters on November 6, 2012. It requires employers to pay their employees a minimum wage of $10.00 per hour for work performed within the City of San Jos� and requires the minimum wage to increase annually by the cost of living, if any, beginning on January 1, 2014. 

The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on March 11, 2013.

Tapping Into the Promise of Challenging Youth

Operation Prom Dress is accepting donations of new and gently-used dresses now through March 8th. Free E-Waste Collection Fundraiser for: Ida Jew Academies

Ida Jew Academies has partnered with CEAR to recycle all of the collected e-waste. CEAR is a California State approved collector and recycler of electronic waste. They completely shred all hard drives at the securely monitored facility.

 

ACCEPTED ITEMS: Monitors, televisions, desktop and notebook computers, VCRs, stereo equipment, CDs, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, digital cameras, zip drives, telephones, cell phones, printers, copiers, laser and multifunction scanners and fax machines, small household appliances such as toasters, microwaves, mixers and blenders, vacuum cleaners with the dust bag removed, curling irons, lamp, and more.

 

NON-ACCEPTABLE ITEMS: Large household appliances (i.e. refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc.) furniture, hazardous household waste including batteries, car batteries, paint, pesticides, used oil, cleaning supplies, fluorescent light bulbs, water heaters, tires, and more.
