Back in the 1960's, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources stocked Burmese chickens all over the state as a game bird to be hunted like quail or pheasant.
The birds never took hold in other areas of Georgia except Fitzgerald. These fowl made their way to downtown where they have prospered ever since!
Whether loved or not, Burmese chickens are a familiar part of the Fitzgerald Scene.
The Wild Chicken Festival, held in the Historic Downtown District of Fitzgerald, celebrates these unique residents.
