Happy 4th of July
| |
Whoops! I know I said I would be back this week with my concluding thoughts on the series I started, but I didn't realize that today would be the 4th of July. So, I'll finish next week. I promise!
Here are some selected thoughts for all of us Americans that I've chosen to ruminate on as we celebrate another Independence Day. From all of us here at Calvary, we want to wish you and your family a safe and a fun 4th of July!
Also, a quick reminder: TOMORROW, Friday, July 5, the church office will be CLOSED for the holiday. So if you need us, please contact us on Monday. -Matt
The American Revolution was a beginning, not a consummation. ~Woodrow Wilson You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. ~Erma Bombeck In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved. ~Franklin D. Roosevelt This, then, is the state of the union: free and restless, growing and full of hope. So it was in the beginning. So it shall always be, while God is willing, and we are strong enough to keep the faith. ~Lyndon B. Johnson America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact - the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality. ~Adlai Stevenson We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. ~Robert J. McCracken
What is the essence of America? Finding and maintaining that perfect, delicate balance between freedom "to" and freedom "from." ~Marilyn vos Savant, in Parade

Team Guatemala, January 2014
| | |
Here's an update!
Fourteen teams of bag-tossers showed up to play against each other as we played in Calvary's Bean Bag Tournament which benefited Team Guatemala, January 2014.
The food was awesome - thank you Chef Ron! - and the atmosphere was fun and wholesome. We offered two raffles to participate in. One was a 50/50 split with the winner taking home $57 cash, and the other was for a brand-new, well-made, custom set of Bags and Boards. Talk to Aaron Spengler about the quality of the boards because he was able to take them home!
The winners of the Tournament were a team of brothers, Brian and Michael Stoskus. Our runners up were Ken Bulthuis & Glenn Fiala in 2nd place, and our third placement was with Ed & Marv Vander Vliet. Way to go you guys!!
We turn our attention to a golf outing scheduled for Saturday, September 28. Mark your calendars now, brush up on your game, and look for more details to follow. See Gary Deckinga or John Voss if you have any questions.

Pray for Camp Manitoqua's Summer Staff
| | |
We have two members serving at Manitoqua this summer!
Summer 2013 is just around the corner! Manitoqua could not be more excited to greet the many staff, campers and families that will be soon walking their grounds to hopefully encounter their vision: to help people find Christ and grow in their faith. Each year they hire, train and house nearly 80 college-age staff for their summer camping programs. This year, Calvary has TWO members working on their staff this summer: Mark Guthrie and Shannon Gier. One of Manitoqua's hopes is to keep them connected to us while they are serving there with them. This is a perfect opportunity to offer up daily prayer support for Mark and Shannon as well as encouragement through letters, e-mails or care packages. Any questions, please contact the church office at info@calvaryop.org.

Calvary Cares
| |
Calvary Cares' ministry goal is to assist people in various needs. Often these people include the elderly, widow, single mothers, people recovering from illness and families that are financially on hard times. While the elders and deacons try to address these needs, they often need assistance, both professionally and physically. We also know that many people of Calvary would love to assist, but are not aware of the needs.
If you would like to become involved with the Calvary Cares ministry, please contact either Keith Baar or Randy Kosar.
