For the Week of February 28-March 7
Vol. 9, Issue 7
The Bible Miniseries

I was made aware of something very cool, something that you might have heard about already since it's been advertised in a lot of different avenues. I think this is especially fitting since we are in the midst of Lent season and Easter is coming up.

You may have heard about The Bible, an epic five-week, 10 hour television miniseries premiering THIS Sunday, March 3, 2013 on the History Channel from Emmy Award winning husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. For two hours each Sunday night (rebroadcast Monday on Lifetime and Wednesday on History Channel) millions of viewers will see the Bible come to life in a way never before seen. The final episode of the series will air on Easter Sunday and will feature the death and resurrection of Jesus.

While I'm normally skeptical of anything that tries to "Hollywood-ize" the Bible, especially since it can lead to erroneous interpretation or inserting un-Scriptural ideas (or even removing Scriptural ideas) that the writers or filmmakers want to shoehorn in, this high quality project looks to be based on a solid team of advisors, such as Rick Warren, Erwin McManus, Jim Daly, Paul Eshleman (Campus Crusade for Christ), Luis Palau, Denny Rydberg (Young Life) and a few others.

This resounding endorsement from Rick Warren helped seal my interest in this series: "I've probably seen most, if not all, of the films about the Bible produced in the past 50 years. This one stands alone, in a class by itself, as the best I've ever seen. Brilliantly produced with stunning cinematography, a Hans Zimmer score and academy-worthy acting, it stands head-and-shoulder above the rest. Too many 'Bible' films end up feeling like documentaries, with stilted dialog, second-class sets, and narration that feels like a lecture. In contrast, this series, draws you into the story from the start. The key to its effectiveness is that it lets the Bible speak for itself, without commentary, excuse or qualification, which makes it unique. This is living history at its best!"

I know in this day and age many people, especially the younger generation, are much more visual than literal. For many people, reading the Bible can be a chore. So, for a miniseries like this to come along and help others visualize what's going on in the Bible, it can be an invaluable tool for conversation and discussion at home and at school.

I'll be posting my thoughts, either on our Facebook wall or somewhere else and we all can talk about it for the next few weeks! This Sunday will cover Genesis: creation, the fall, Noah, Abraham to Jacob, and the origin of the nation that would become known as Israel. So, check it out on the History Channel.
