Back to School Jitters - How to Alleviate the Stress

The end of August and the beginning of September - the most stressful time of year if you are a teacher. Or a parent. Or a student! The nice thing about the beginning of the school year, though, is that the hardest part is over and done with right at the beginning. The school year only gets better with each month that goes by, and before you know it? Summer vacation is here again!

What is it that everyone gets uptight about, anyway?

For parents, it is the assurance they need that their babies will be well taken care of. For teachers, it is the pressure of getting routines lined out and the school day running smoothly. For students, it is the unknown expectations.

Some simple advice to get your year off to a great start? Make it a great first day! Get daily procedures in place right from the second they walk in the room.

Article Back to School Jitters Continued

Above everything else, establishing regular routines is the most effective strategy in relieving stress for everyone. This includes everything from pencil sharpening to bathroom breaks to where to put their papers and stacking chairs at the end of the day.

Some other ideas? Give students ownership - give them a job on the first day. Have students write a letter of appreciation to their former teacher - this is a great way to assess their writing. Give parents a "Welcome Brochure" - a tri-fold brochure with information such as the best way to contact you, your policy on homework, and maybe a quick explanation of your grading process. This is a good way to put parents at ease, which will trickle down to your students.

What are your ideas for alleviating the stress from the beginning of the school year? We would love to hear them! Please email us at [email protected]  and let us know. We would love to hear them and share them on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Whether you feel prepared or not, JP is here to help you. We have resources available on our website (www.jponline.com), and if you find yourself in need of professional development? We are only a click or a phone call away. Let's make this year the best ever!
