Finally, government officials are addressing the issue of violence and the media connection. President Obama highlighted the topic in his State of the Union Message, and recently on the CBS morning news Governor Christie of New Jersey, discussed the issue with Charlie Rose. In the midst of their conversation Governor Christie mentioned that he does not let violent video games, "...Like Call of Duty," into his home. How many young children are repeatedly and unwittingly exposed to violence on a daily basis in the games their parents buying, their older siblings play, or their parents even play with them?
Parents are the leaders in their homes. Parents need to recognize the direct connection between the violence we are seeing in communities across our nation, and the impact of putting our children in front of violence in video games, movies, and other forms of "entertainment." Research shows violent video games can cause a reduction in activity in areas of the brain moderating aggression and delaying gratification. Yet I know many parents who actually buy these games for their children. And then they wonder why there is an increase in acting out.
In some cases parents actually play the games with their children unaware of the fact that the impact on the brain can last for up to 10 days after a person stops playing the game.
In many of the instances of school shootings and other violent acts the individuals committing these atrocities actually practiced committing their assaults by playing video games.
There are adults out there playing these games in moderation and not suffer any ill effects. But for many adults and young children, especially those with compromised reasoning, social skill deficits, or mental illness, these games can potentially contribute to violence and antisocial behaviors.
Most parents I speak with tell me they don't want to limit their child's access to various games and media because, "all of their friends are doing it". It seems some may be more interested in saving face and having their children accepted, then willing to face and accept the potential long-range impact.
We need to begin recognizing the potential dangers inherent, in these activities. Opting for healthier, more socially oriented activities, in combination with more positive online entertainment will only help to develop more balance children and adults.
I'm not anti-technology. It can be highly beneficial when used in moderation and to support the biological, psychological, emotional, and social growth of a individual. However the negative impact that I'm seeing daily is undeniably scary. Do I believe there is a direct connection between the acts we have been seeing and the way various technologies are used? Absolutely yes! And I think it's time to do something about it.
Be well,
John
