NY-BEST and Pace Energy and Climate Center Present Forum on Energy Storage and Microgrids

Microgrids, energy storage, distributed generation and a cleaner more resilient electric grid have been front and center in recent energy policy discussions. In New York, the newly enacted State budget built upon findings of Governor Cuomo's disaster-related commissions and includes a requirement that within a year, the State must develop recommendations regarding the establishment of microgrids in New York State.

SyracuseCoE CSCS Hosts 3rd Annual Spring Greening Teacher Conference
On April 30th, SyracuseCoE CSCS hosted the 3rd Annual Spring Greening teacher conference, which provides teachers in the CNY region and beyond with the resources, training, and connections necessary to incorporate environmental, sustainability, and related STEM lessons into their current curriculum.
This year's event attended by 35 teachers from 23 schools in 17 different districts. The event drew 62 attendees in total, including professionals from local community organizations. As a result of training held at the conference, 42 rain barrel or compost tumbler demonstration projects will be established at schools.
A special thanks goes out to project partners GreeningUSA, Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency, Onondaga Community College, and Partners for Education and Business. Funding for this program was provided by the NYS Pollution Prevention Institute through a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Learn More

SyracuseCoE CSCS Wins Awards for 3rd Annual Spring Greening Conference
The SyracuseCoE Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (SyracuseCoE CSCS) recently received three awards for leading the 3rd Annual Spring Greening teacher conference in April. SyracuseCoE CSCS was honored to receive the following awards community groups in Central New York:
- The Professional Development Award from the CNY STEM Hub and Partners for Education and Business. Partners for Education and Business serves as the CNY STEM Hub Steward, ensuring an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
- GreeningUSA's "Greening Our Community Advocacy Award" in the education category. GreeningUSA advocates for sustainable communities to the benefit of local economies and environments.
- The "Sign of Sustainability" Award from Sustainable Tompkins, a community-based organization whose mission is to promote the long-term well-being of our region by integrating social equity, economic vitality, ecological stewardship, and shared responsibility.
Spring Greening provides teachers in the greater CNY region with resources to incorporate environmental, sustainability, and related STEM lessons into their current curriculum, and connects educators with each other and environmentally-focused community organizations.

CenterState CEO Awards Latest Round of Grants for Growth
In May, CenterState CEO announced the winners in the 10th round of its Grants for Growth program, a seed program supporting
innovative research projects between universities and industry to support "innovative" applied-research projects between universities and industry to improve business competitiveness and create jobs.
CenterState CEO awarded six "emerging" regional companies a total of more than $398,000, the economic-development organization said in an email to its members.
When leveraged against private sector and university-matching funds, this new investment will reach more than $936,000.

USGBC New York State Upstate Chapter Hosts Speaker Series on Green Schools
Date: June 11, 2013 - 5:30pm-7:00pm Place: SUNY Albany Campus, Fine Arts Building, Room 114
This presentation focuses on the means for implementing green building design into school projects. A case-study series of examples for individual strategies and comprehensive systems will exhibit how this achieved, and what possibilities are available in green school design moving forward.
Learning Objectives:
- List three rating systems used for rating sustainability and high performance design of educational facility projects.
- Define BIM and parametric modeling and describe their uses.
- List several potential strategies for implementing green design into educational facility projects.
- Cite 2-3 emerging trends in "green" design applied to educational facilities.
