SyracuseCoE Announces 2013 Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) Recipients
SyracuseCoE announced its 2013 CAP funding recipients in April. This year's recipients include:
- Air Innovations of North Syracuse, for the commercialization of a "green" metal hydride for air conditioning.
- Cortland Research, LLC, of Homer for the direct commercialization of the POUNCE system, an energy conservation system created by Cortland Research that provides data and autonomous control for reducing energy costs.
- Healthway Home Products of Pulaski for the commercialization of disinfecting filtration system (DFS) technology for schools, health care and LEED-certified commercial buildings.
- O'Brien & Gere of Syracuse to accelerate development of an innovative water quality monitor to detect taste and odor.
- WavElectric of Ithaca and Syracuse to develop and test the first WE50 integrated wave-energy converter prototype.
CAP grants are designed to encourage innovation, product development, and entrepreneurship in the fields of indoor environmental quality, clean and renewable energy, and water resources, and to create jobs and wealth in the 12 counties of Central Upstate New York.
The SyracuseCoE Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) was established in partnership with CenterState CEO (formerly the Metropolitan Development Association) and the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) with grants received under the auspices of New York Assemblyman William Magnarelli. Four Student Companies Receive Awards from SyracuseCoE at "Emerging Talk"
Student start-ups won a combined $218,000 in seed funding at the third annual Emerging Talk conference on April 12th and 13th in the Whitman School of Management. SyracuseCoE sponsored the Energy and Sustainability Track. Start-up companies that received awards include:
- Avatar Sustainable Technologies, which creates energy from cellulose waste, created by Bhavin Bhayani (SUNY-ESF, Ph.D. candidate, bioprocess engineering)
- El Dorado Energy, Inc., which provides consumers in the emerging markets with the gold standard in energy, created by Kiven Pierre (SU, master's in business administration)
- SunRazors, which brings clean solar electricity to Mexican villages and gives communities the opportunity for social and economic development through micro-finance, created by Anna Ebers (SUNY-ESF, Ph.D. candidate, energy economics) and Andres Diz (SU, finance and entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises)
- Trifecta, an integrated, energy-efficient system for growing leafy greens, tilapia and gourmet mushrooms, created by Matthew Gretton (SUNY-ESF, environmental studies: communications, culture and writing)

An informational webinar regarding NYSERDA's Program Opportunity Notice (PON) 2606 Advanced Buildings Program will be held on May 14, 2013 at 1 PM EST. The webinar will provide information on the solicitation including technology areas of interest, eligible project categories and funding, program requirements, and the proposal submission process.

Diane Brandli wins the NYS Green Building Advocate of the Year Award
Diane Brandli was honored as Green Building Advocate of the Year during the 2013 New York State Green Building Conference held in Syracuse.
The award is presented by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) New York Upstate Chapter to an individual actively involved in green building and its supporting disciplines, either in a professional or volunteer capacity, and prominent in promoting the need to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on humans and the natural environment.
Brandli is a New York state-certified interior designer and a Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design-accredited professional with over 30 years of experience, including four LEED-certified projects. As the owner of dbdesign, a New York state-certified Women's Business Enterprise, she consults on commercial projects both as a sustainability and interior design consultant.
