FFI intends to design and implement thought provoking experiences that benefit youth in the panhandle area while promoting global citizenship and social activism. Several areas of interest are addressing issues that will encourage students to stay in school, as well as think about world travel as a viable opportunity. Jesse Jordan, Founder, holds a Masters degree in Counseling and has traveled to and thru 38 countries for fun and cause. His partnership with Paul Harvey, local business man and social entrepreneur, is bound to make a difference in the lives of kids that need it most. Congratulations to our Railroad Square quilt artist, Valerie Goodwin, on her new book.

Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place, A Visual Guide. on sale now at bookstores and online internationally. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

It is part essay, part technique, with a gallery of my work as well as student work. Here's a blurb about the book:

Architect, author, and quilt artist Valerie S. Goodwin has used her combined skills to create this unique book. Working with paint, collage, and stitch, Valerie encourages readers to integrate poetry, memory, and personal experience into quilt maps that tell a story. Lines and shapes are at the heart of Valerie's aesthetic and are a constant companion throughout the book. Improvisation and planning are equally important in her work, and she inspires readers to use some of each. Valerie provides tips and lessons on design basics, the importance of background, working with sheers, and many useful techniques. Her maps are concurrently real and imaginary, abstract and linear, and she motivates readers to explore. The galleries throughout the book - of Valerie's work plus that of her students - provide additional inspiration to try her techniques.
