Summer Newsletter            May 2013

Greetings!Colonial House Inn, Weston, VT

It's been a bit nutty here the past few months though business was good this winter.  We are looking forward to personal "stuff" settling down and to having a busy summer with visits from our long-time and new house guests.

Kim hosted a wonderful quilting retreat at the end of April.  The quilters worked a quick quilt using a "jelly roll" and "charm squares".  We used the dining room for sewing and ate our meals there, too.  Most of the quilters went home with a finished quilt top . . . it was awesome!
April 2013 Quilting Retreat
The summer's entertainment is going to be especially good this year.  The Weston Playhouse, the Dorset Theatre Festival and the Hills Alive Summer Festival are bringing terrific shows to the area.  See our description below and click on the links for even more details.

We are doing some renovations here this spring and early summer.  We've already added a restroom off the hallway between the dining room and the guest living room.  We are also connecting the dormer between inn rooms 4 and 6.  Soon you won't have to bump your head on the sloped ceiling while standing at the sink.  We hope you will be pleasantly surprised with the changes to the inn rooms! We are opening the dining room up a bit more for outside breakfast guests so you may see a few more people at breakfast than usual.

On the family
Alexis March 2013
Alexis tests her new dance costume!
side of things, everyone is great.  Alexis will be 9 years old  this summer and we are astounded at how she has grown (she's up to Kim's chin now).  She continues to love her dance classes, is doing well at school and is now shooting hoops with Jeff . . . we see basketball games in her future!

Mom and Dad (a.k.a. Betty and John) continue to thrive in their Prison Ministry.  John was ordained as a Minister in April and Betty, though not wearing the title, operates as John's co-Pastor.  They are finding new avenues for their ministry and hospitality talents every year and we are very proud of them.

David and his kids are having new adventures and it's all good.  David has added a few new items to his offerings at the bakery, is painting the bakery interior and is adding another
John, Betty and VT grand-kids: Jack, Alexis, Libby and Sam
freezer to hold inventory.  Libby has spent the last semester in Belgium studying (we think) and traveling (we know!) as much as possible; she will be a senior at college next fall near Boston.  Sam is finishing up his freshman year at college here in Vermont and is enjoying his studies (we think) along with the social aspects  !  Jack will be a senior in high school and is looking into colleges.  He has gotten taller than all of us and that is just weird!

We have a new recipe for you on our website: flat bread pizzas.  It's another one from our beloved cousin and friend, Judi (see Kim's note about Judi below).  We know you will enjoy it as much as we have.  Even Alexis, who does not like pizza (go figure!), loves these home-made pizzas.  You can follow the recipe to the letter or mix it up a bit to your own taste. It's flexible!

We hope you are well and truly blessed! We look forward to seeing you at some point soon and hearing your own updates.  Until then . . .

All our best,
Jeff, Kim and Alexis Seymour

     1. American Express - we are accepting it again.  You can collect your reward points while staying here!
New syrup warmers 2013

     2.  Syrup warmers - our local potter made more and they are even better than the last batch.  With some Vermont Maple Syrup, it's wonderful as a wedding, housewarming or graduation gift.  We can ship them; just give us a call.

    3. June - it's time for renovations.  We hope you will be pleased with the changes to the upstairs inn rooms.  We are painting and freshening up here and there in the motel rooms, too and we now have a restroom on the main floor.

Quilt As-You-Go

Kim is teaching a wonderful class in November -  a reversible table runner that is quilted as it is made.  You WILL go home with
Class Project Nov 8-10, 2013a completed or nearly completed piece after the weekend.  The class samples are made with Christmas fabric on one side and either a winter scene or fall foliage fabric on the other side.  It is great to have one table runner that can cover several seasons.  You decide which ones!  You can also make this into a larger quilt if you would like; a lap quilt would be awesome and quick to make from these blocks as well.

Quick Quilted Jacket
Kim held a class for a quilted jacket several years ago that was NOT for the faint of heart.  This one promises to be much easier and should be quick to finish.  All you will need are strips of fabric (either a jelly roll or random widths that you cut) a sweatshirt and your usual sewing supplies.  Kim will have a picture of this from another student or will make her sample soon!

We are now using the dining room as our sewing space for quilting retreats.   The natural light is awesome and it is a lovely space in which to work.  Call Kim with questions or check out our website for prices and a basic supply list.

Our cousin and beloved friend, Judi Ketels, Our friend and cousin, Judi Ketelspassed away here in March after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was dear to our whole family and we treasure our memories of her.  If you were here during the summer of 2010 or summer/fall 2012 you may have met her in passing.  She enjoyed meeting so many of you.

Regardless of her health challenges, Judi kept her spirits upbeat, her focus on being grateful for every day and for the people in her life.  We found a quote that she had written down that sums up her outlook:

"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass.  It is about learning to dance in the rain."
-Anonymous

Our niece, Libby found this poem on Facebook and sent it to Judi.  We wanted to share it with you, too.

What Cancer Cannot Do

"Cancer is so limited....
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot shut out memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the Spirit."
-Author Unknown

We know Judi is at peace now and no longer in pain; for that we are deeply grateful. To those who sent us prayers and support during Judi's illness this winter, we are deeply grateful to you for your kindness.  A heartfelt and sincere

"Thank you"
