BETNOTA PERSONAL NOTE FROM BETTINA

Hello
!

"Sadly, this morning, October 26, 2012 Dr John Upledger passed away and has begun his next journey. The family is grieving right now and our thoughts and prayers go out to them. Dr John has made such an incredible impact on so many and we are honored to continue to support his work and carry it forward."

- Upledger Institute

My thoughts and condolences are going to Dr. John's family, close friends and to all those who will miss him and whose lives have been changed by his work.

Dr. John Upledger, the developer of CranioSacral Therapy and founder of the Upledger Institute, was a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.), an incredible healer, a scientist, pioneer, teacher, and visionary.

His work has inspired and radically changed my life and my work for over 20 years. His studies gave me the tools to make a big impact in the lives of others and create hope for those in need. I was privileged to witness his compassionate touch personally, seeing him listen to the body's inner wisdom and offer natural healing. I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to listen to many of his lectures and to be part of the teaching/assisting team at some of his seminars.

His intuition, knowledge and wisdom touched and changed the lives of many. We who have studied with him and studied his work now have the duty and privilege to carry his legacy and work into the future. We are obligated to continue to spread his work to those who need it most. Without him, CranioSacral Therapy would not be known worldwide.

Thank you Dr. John for your vision, your teaching and your inspiration. Rest in peace.

In honor of Dr. John's passing I added an extra article this month, "What is CranioSacral Therapy and how can it help?"

Bettina

Looking forward to next month's Healthy Thoughts already?

CSTDISCOVER CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
What is CST and How Can it Help
by Upledger Institute Website
DR JOHN CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.

CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Colic
  • Autism
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Scoliosis
  • Infantile Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction
SER is a therapeutic process that uses and expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma. SER1 offers applications designed to enhance results using CST and other complementary therapies.
  • Assess and mobilize the Avenue of Expression working through more than 10 different body components, including the thoracic inlet, hard palate and hyoglossal tissues.
  • Locate and release Energy Cysts.
  • Release suppressed emotions that may be inhibiting complete structural releases.
  • Refine listening and comprehension skills.
  • Improve palpation and whole-body evaluation skills.

CPACOUCH POTATOES ARISE: Overcome Chronic Health Conditions
5 Tips for Dealing with the Emotional Issues of Chronic Health Conditions
-by Bettina Neumann, PT, CST, LLCC

Not all the symptoms of chronic health conditions are visible to the naked eye. In fact most of them, like aches and pains, swelling, fatigue, intestinal problems, balance and muscle weakness are not visible at all.  Despite the obstacles, experts agree that, generally, patients with chronic conditions can live a full and meaningful life.

Your symptoms might be silent companions, always there but no one can see. Perhaps your symptoms are very present and you feel very visible, as though the symptom is all people will see. Whether visible to outsiders or no, your symptoms can lead to feelings of bitterness, anger, irritability, or frustration, especially if you allow them to become the boss in your life. Or you may end up blaming yourself or others for your misery.

Most people around you are not aware of your silent struggle.

Things you may be dealing with :

  • Self-image. Has your appearance changed as a result of your condition?
  • Inactivity. Activities you enjoyed, or simply took for granted, may be more challenging or impossible to do.
  • Lost Time. Time-consuming self-care routines may eat up the little free time you had in your already busy schedule.
  • Blame. You may ask yourself: why me? This often leads to an urge to blame the people around you, the doctors, therapists, insurance companies, healthcare systems, or even your family and friends, for something they should have done and did not do (or did and shouldn't have).
What are some things you can do to overcome the emotional imbalance that often accompanies chronic conditions? Things to help you lead a full and meaningful life?

Here are 5 tips to get started:

1. Reality and Education: The more you know about your condition the better equipped you are to understand what is happening and why it is happening. Instead of turning to the Internet--the wild west of health information--ask your doctor, your therapist, or other health care providers for trusted information resources.

2. Take Responsibility: Make your medical providers your partners in your care. Do not leave the responsibility to your doctors, your therapists or other medical providers. Listen to your body, become aware of the small voices. Get in touch with your inner physician, who is the voice of wisdom within you. This voice, when unclouded can become your most powerful tool for you. (source: Your Inner Physician and You by Dr. John Upledger)

3. Communicate: Allow yourself to express your feelings to your loved ones, friends, health care practitioners and coworkers. Don't blame or yell, rather strive for open, honest two-way communication.

4. Affinity: Make your symptoms friends, or at least guides, instead of enemies. Stay within your comfortable parameters and increase your endurance slowly to decrease your symptoms. Learn what makes them worse and what eases your symptoms. Plan activities around what you can do instead of what you used to do. Learn to accept your current activity level and aim to become more active in the future. Increase your activity level slowly and steadily.

5. Get Help: Find a therapist to help you on the path to better living. A CranioSacral Therapist, who has been trained in SER (an extension of CST) can help you to get in touch with your inner physician. Find a psychotherapist who is specialized in working with chronic health conditions. Talk to me.

YUM2 HEALTHY COOKING WITH SHANTI PAPPAS

Shanti Pappas

Shanti Pappas is a jewel in San Francisco! I've only recently found her, and she has already helped me personally. So much so that I asked her to share her knowledge with you, my readers.

Shanti does not diet with people. She helps people avoid the need to diet. Shanti's priority as a certified health coach is to care for you and help you take care of yourself. Through nutrition consultations, gentle cleanses and programs she provides a supportive environment that enables you to achieve your health goals.

Shanti helps people learn how to eat for nutrition and enjoyment.  This month she wants to share information about root vegetables plus a yummy roasted root vegetable soup recipe. Enjoy!

Food Focus: Root Vegetables

The roots of any plant are its anchor and foundation; they are the essential parts that support and nourish the plant. Root vegetables lend these properties to us when we eat them, making us feel physically and mentally grounded and rooted, increasing our stability, stamina and endurance. Roots are a rich source of nutritious complex carbohydrates, providing a steady source of necessary sugars to the body. Instead of upsetting blood sugar levels like refined sweet foods, they regulate them. Since they absorb, assimilate and supply plants with vital nutrients, roots likewise increase absorption and assimilation in our digestive tracts.

Long roots, like burdock, carrots, parsnips and daikon radish, are excellent blood purifiers and can help improve circulation in the body and increase mental clarity. Round roots, like turnips, radishes, beets and rutabagas, are nourishing to the stomach, spleen, pancreas and reproductive organs and can help regulate blood sugar and moods, and alleviate cravings.

Roasted Root Vegetable Soup, inspired by Lemons and Loafers

Ingredients:

1 carrot, cut into cubes

1 parsnip, cut into cubes

1 small sugar pumpkin, cubed
1/2 small butternut squash, cubed

2 to 6 cups vegetable stock

2 tbs. olive oil
Pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger), to taste

Sea salt, to taste

Directions:

1. Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.

  1. Place all cubed vegetables on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pumpkin pie spice.

  2. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until tender.

  3. In two batches, use a food processor or blender to blend vegetables with enough

vegetable stock to reach a smooth consistency. Once processed, transfer to a soup pot over low heat and stir in more stock until desired consistency is reached.

  4. Season with more pumpkin pie spice and salt, to taste.

  5. Enjoy!

Clove:

A powerful detoxifier, clove contains a variety of phytonutrients, making it an anti-inflammatory as well.

Pumpkin:

Packed with vitamins and carotenoids, pumpkin is also high in fiber and will help you flush out toxins.

Winter Squash:

These gourds are rich in fiber which aids in digestion and heart health, and are also high in beta-carotene and vitamin C.

Testimonial:

After a double mastectomy I learned there were simple measures that could be taken to prevent developing the problem of lymphedema.  As an RN I tried to educate myself about lymphedema since I had taken care of patients that had been debilitated by this problem.  After a double mastectomy and a problem with ongoing seromas after surgery I was particularly concerned I might develop this complication myself.  One of the things i liked most about Bettina's class the solid, practical information she provided in a short class without my having to do even more research in addition to what I was doing about cancer, surgery and recovery.  Not only did I feel less overwhelmed but she gave information in the class that I hadn't read about in my research.  I've taken the information I got in her class and developed a plan for myself that supports my recovery after surgery and gives me confidence I am doing the most I can to prevent developing this problem.
