LegalShield: Worry Less. Live More.

Contractor Takes a Stand Against Negative Review on yelp.com

A court battle brewing between a Washington, D.C. contractor and the homeowner he claims ruined his business with a negative Yelp review could make you think twice about posting one.

Monday marked the first day of trial in a lawsuit brought by Christopher Dietz, who is seeking $750,000 in damages against Jane Perez, a customer who claimed Deitz botched a home renovation project and charged her for unnecessary services.  Read the Full Article Here.

What can you do as a contractor?  First, know what's out there!  Go to the popular reviewing sites (yelp.com, angieslist.com, google.com, etc.) and see what information is on there about your company.  You can "claim" your listing by clicking on the "is this your business?" (or similar) link.  Be sure to be in your office (or at the phone number posted in the listing), as an automated system will call you to either give or ask you to give a code to verify that you are associated with the company.

Negative reviews, while some may be legitimate, are plaguing businesses across the internet.  If not legitimate, some reviews may be posted by competitors, disgruntled exes, etc. Also note that some sites have "algorithms"  that detect "false" reviews and may not display these.  Their algorithms also detect "too good to be true" reviews (which may be from legitimate customers.  This is said to protect the consumer against company employees, family members, etc. from posting false reviews.

It is difficult to remove bad reviews or have blocked positive reviews published, but contact customer service through the website or on the phone, to determine what their process is.

NARIGC will keep you updated on the court case above.
