NARI 2020: Future in Focus

The remodeling industry and NARI member companies have undergone significant changes and face continuing challenges as a result of the recession.  NARI 2020, less than seven years away, is an envisioned future.  In 2020, how will NARI National and its chapters become more relevant to the changing business needs and demands of its members?  In 2020, how can NARI member companies be better equipped and informed to succeed into this future?  This event examines the challenges faced by the association as well as its members.  With limited complimentary registration of 150, NARI Chapter delegates and leaders, as well as NARI members, are invited to participate in this event and join this discussion.

Learning Objectives:

  •  To foster common understanding of NARI 2020 as a goal and envisioned future
  • To better understand the business needs and challenges of today's remodelers
  • To educate members and chapters about the value of a strong government affairs program in a federated organization like NARI
  • To engage in a dialogue with members and association leaders about how the association can become more relevant and valuable to the business needs of its members
  • To create excitement and freedom about changing our organization

Office of State Fire Marshal Attempting to pre-empt Fire/Building Provisions of Municipal Code of Chicago
Action Needed!!
On Friday, June 28, the OSFM filed proposed rules with the Illinois Legislature's Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR).  A full copy of the OSFM proposed rules can be found HERE.  JCAR's public comment period ends on August 12 and it is crucial that JCAR hears from as many adversely impacted parties as possible!  A summary of the changes:
  • mandates that sprinklers be installed in ALL new single family homes,
  • mandates that sprinklers be installed in ALL single family homes where renovation work exceeds 50% (the mandate is also silent as to when the 50% renovation figure is cumulative over an indefinite life of the house),
  • mandates that sprinklers be installed in ALL pre-1975 high-rise residential buildings (regardless of whether those buildings have an Engineer's Life Safety Evaluation Plan approved by the City and regardless of whether those property owners have invested substantial sums in those life-safety capital upgrades),
  • mandates that sprinklers be installed in ALL places with assembly seating, including places of worship, over 700sf, and
  •  mandates that an 'architect, engineer, designer and contractor' shall have a DUTY and RESPONSIBLE and BE HELD LIABLE to ensure that the above provisions of the OSFM rules are followed on all projects (this is the first instance we are aware of where the OSFM has sought to regulate architects and engineers through the Fire Investigation Act).

The below link provides the JCAR membership along with their office address, phone number and e-mail: http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/member.pdf.

The members of JCAR need to be contacted TODAY  with opinions from contractors affected by these changes!
