The Healthy Allen University: Mind, Body, and Soul Group participated in National Kick Butts Day on March 19, 2014 to educate their peers about the dangers of tobacco. The Healthy Allen University Group distributed educational materials to their peers and talked about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The students set up a table outside the cafeteria with tobacco-free educational materials, posters, and stickers.
This year marked the 19th annual National Kick Butts Day, a day of activism that was created by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids' mission is to empower youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against tobacco. There were more than 1,000 events that were planned on March 19th by independent organizers across the United States and around the world.
Dr. Gennetta G. Mitchell, assistant biology professor at Allen University, wrote the Kick Butts grant. Mitchell states, "The students of the Healthy Allen group were pleased to educate and empower their peers about their health and the harmful effects of tobacco on their bodies. These students care and want to make a difference on the Allen University campus."
Allen University is looking forward to making Kick Butts Day an annual event on their campus.
