LOVE YOUR HEART!
February marks American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer of both men and women. CVD costs the U.S over $300 billion each year in healthcare costs, medications and lost productivity.

Know how to take care of your heart. Two things that are good for your heart are quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking increases one's risk of developing heart disease. Secondhand smoke exposure is bad for one's heart. Just a few minutes of exposure can lead to a heart attack.

State Plan evaluation report

This month, a report outlining the results of an evaluation of Addressing the Toll of Tobacco Use, the 2007-2013 South Carolina State Tobacco Plan, was released. Prepared by a team of SC tobacco control partners, the report highlights progress made in each of the state plan's five goal areas and provides recommendations to guide current and future tobacco control and prevention efforts.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and its volunteer advocates from across South Carolina invite residents to participate in a celebration of life.  Lights of Hope will honor survivors and caregivers and remember loved ones who are no longer with us.  Cancer touches the lives of everyone in some way...through family members, friends, and co-workers.

Show your support on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 6:30pm on the north steps of the South Carolina State House. You can purchase a Lights of Hope bag for display at the event for a $10 donation here or by contacting the local office at 843-858-2310. If making a purchase online, please be sure to indicate SC.

NEW RESOURCES
CDC releases new reports and ads

The CDC recently released new resources for tobacco control advocates. The first is the Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs 2014. This updated guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for state tobacco control programs. One notable highlight from the guidelines - the CDC recommendation for annual tobacco control spending in SC is now $51 million. View the guidelines.

The CDC also released the Prevention Status Reports 2013. The reports provide state highlights on public health policies and practices, including tobacco use. View the reports.

Additionally, the CDC released two new Tips from Former Smokers ads. The ads feature Terrie Hall days before losing her battle to cancer. More campaign ads are scheduled to be released later this year. View the ads.
