Ready to Think, Manage and Learn Differently?

How do you prepare an organization for the future when we don't know what the future will bring? How can we get comfortable with challenging goals and navigate the grey zone between here and there? How do you sustain this? Answers to these questions, which you can use to strengthen your management system, will be discussed in May's webinar.

Totyota Kata is a system for managing improvement, adaptiveness and innovation. The Improvement Kata is a teachable pattern for working scientifically when you pursue goals in complex systems. The Coaching Kata is a pattern for teaching the Improvement Kata.

Denver

Founded: 1948

Privately owned

Employees: 230 (including 30 with Alfred Industries)

A powerful family legacy keeps Greg Alfred's gaze firmly fixed on a successful future for customers and employees

"I'm third generation," says President and CEO Greg Alfred. His grandfather Lawrence started the business in 1948 and his father Douglas succeeded him.

"One of the overall successes of the company is transitioning through three generations," says Greg. "The most difficult transition is from the first generation to the second. My father had already lived on my side of the negotiation and was very generous and very open."

A Lean Journey Through Allegion
On April 2nd and 3rd, CAMT hosted a Lean Journey tour of the Allegion facility in Security, Colorado.

Participants came from manufacturing companies all over the state for a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Allegion operations. We were able to see results from Continuous Improvement efforts like Rapid Improvement Events (RIE) aligned with Corporate KPI's to plant KPI's and their improvements in Customer Service/Order Entry, Prototype Fabrication, Metal Finishing, Lock Assembly, Key and Lock Machining and Materials Management departments.

CAMT would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to Allegion for their hospitality and allowing us to see behind the curtain. A good time was had by all and everyone gained some valuable insights and inspiration.

CAMT's Kids Connection:
Kylan and the Magic Longboard

Kids Connection and Kota Longboards recently gave one 3rd-grader the tools, connections, and inspiration to craft his own special longboard.

The Kids Connection program is designed to build a bridge between technology and education in order to inspire the Thomas Edison's of tomorrow -- and that is precisely what it is doing!

After taking a tour of the Kota Longboards facility with his 3rd
grade STEM school class, Kylan was inspired to use his newfound knowledge of longboard manufacturing to achieve a long-time personal goal of honoring his grandfather, Papa Mike.

To follow Kylan's amazing adventures through inspiration, design, and manufacturing, check out this recent blog post from Mark Schmit!

To learn more about the types of hands-on real-world opportunities Kids Connection can provide, please contact the CAMT Chief of Programs and Operations Sumer Sorensen-Bain at 303.981.2144 or via
email.

CAMT presents
Ask an Expert!

This month's question:
"When applying 5S is there a standard to the colors used for labels and markings?"

Answer:

When doing 5s the most important thing is to use colors that are symbolic to the organization. However, here is a chart showing common color coding based off of OSHA standards. As an additional tip, before laying any tape you can use sidewalk chalk to test the placement of the lines before making them more permanent. This will save both money and time.

Submit your questions to [email protected] with "ASK EXPERT" in the subject line and we will happily answer them in our next newsletter!
