Training Within Industry or TWI was developed in the U.S. during WWII to train replacements of an industrial workforce off to fight a war. It provided rapid and consistent training and is recognized as part of what helped the Allied forces secure victory as they boosted industrial production and out-produced the enemy. TWI was an absolute success:

 

Of 600 companies using TWI, 100% realized a 25% improvement in grievances and training time. Over 85% of companies reduced by 25% or more labor hours and production time. And more than half saw a significant reduction in scrap.

 

Training Within Industry (TWI) will help you:

STEM School Students Take Tour of Sparkfun

Students get an exclusive tour and are inspired to change their Christmas lists!

   

50 students from a North Denver STEM school were recently treated to a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the inner workings of Sparkfun. Located in Boulder, Sparkfun is the world's largest manufacturer of open source hardware. They also produce a number of educational gadgets and kits, including one that teaches kids to assemble their own mini computer complete with an LCD screen.
 
After touring all aspects of the business, from design to engineering, manufacturing to shipping, several of the students reportedly expanded their Christmas lists to include a wide array of technical Sparkfun gadgets. Third grader Kylan even decided that he wants to work at Sparkfun when he grows up!

Certifiably Green Denver Funding Available in Certain Areas of Denver

CGD has funding available to assist with the implementation "green" projects in the Globeville, 

Elyria-Swansea, Cole and Clayton neighborhoods.

 

Denver's Department of Environmental Health received funding to assist up to 75 businesses within the designated neighborhoods. The partnership will focus on improving small business health, air & water quality and minimize waste.

  

Goals:

  • Reduce energy use
  • Reduce water use
  • Reduce waste
  • Create sustainable businesses in Denver

Services include: 

  • Personalized assessment from a FREE business sustainability advisor with the City & County of Denver.
  • Action plan and ongoing assistance with:

TAA CHAMP Grant and HB-1165: Creating a Pipeline of Future Skilled Employees

The latest endeavors to address the need for highly-skilled workers in Colorado manufacturing

Advanced Manufacturing in Colorado generates $17 billion in annual domestic product, and our state is investing in its request for an increase of in-demand, highly skilled workers.

 

This year, Colorado legislators passed House Bill 13-1165 which supports a Manufacturing Career Pathway for our

K-20 education and employment workforce systems. The term "career pathway" indicates a clear sequence of

connected education and training programs for obtaining cumulative skills and certifications, allowing individuals

to seek both entry level employment and career advancement.

 

This year, the Federal Government awarded Colorado a $25 million TAA CHAMP grant to substantially improve Advanced Manufacturing training equipment infrastructure, courses, and programs at eight of our community colleges.

 

The goals for House Bill 13-1165 and the TAA CHAMP grant include:

  • Identifying workforce skill needs of Colorado manufacturers.
  • Creating paths and opportunities to earn credits which lead to industry-recognized postsecondary
  • credentials.
  • Helping workers enter or advance a manufacturing career. Interactive career mapping and job
  • placements are examples.

Briefly describe your companies products and services

Janska designs, manufactures and distributes women's outerwear and accessories.  We currently serve over 900 women's specialty shops in the United States and Canada and 10 catalogs.

 

 

What makes your company unique?  

Janska was born from a literal dream by its founder Jan Erickson.  We have a mission of comforting millions and millions of people with Janska's stylish, colorful garments.  All of our garments are manufactured in the United States and about 20% of them are manufactured in our own facility in Colorado Springs. 

   

What is a recent highlight of your company's success?

Janska was one of 50 companies recognized as "Companies to Watch in 2012" and as the "2012 Small Business of the Year" by the Colorado Springs Chapter of SCORE. Janska was also a Rising Star 2013 Outerwear finalist presented by the Fashion Group International of Denver.

   

How is your company advancing the industry?

We are actively seeking to bring greater collaboration and cohesiveness to the garment industry in Colorado. We believe through shared experiences we can further all apparel manufacturers in Colorado. We advocate the expansion of US made garments. Within Colorado Springs, we are working with local community colleges to create programs to train sewing operators to create a larger workforce for garment manufacturers in Colorado Springs.

 

Where do you see your company in five years?  

We have a goal of reaching $10 million in revenue in the next five years. We plan on exporting to at least five countries. We also plan on having our internal sewing manufacturing division produce more than 50% of our garments. We view Janska as a nationally recognized brand exemplifying excellence and comforting millions and millions of people.
