An older name could potentially out you, provide dysphoria, or simply mean nothing to you.

What's in a name?

This week on TYC we are going over your name selection. Reasons for picking a name are often obvious and logical but in others it is an emotional or social act rather then one of physical change.

It is also quite a process to change your name officially marking it as a very important touch stone in one's transition. Much like a name changes when you choose to marry, changing your name will effect the way you perceive yourself and the way you are perceived by society.

To think about when selecting a name

Now there are so many ways you can personally approach this topic and because it is so verifiable unique its important to consider the ways you could take it in your video. A few ideas below:

How did you pick your name? was it natural or did you have trouble picking it?
Have you changed your name according to the state yet? what are your experiences with this?
How has your new name been received? are people using it often or are they refusing to use it at all?
Why did you feel you needed to change your name? did it mark you as someone you don't feel you are? did you have dysphoria? or did you change it for external reasons?

although this is found on an MTF transition site the same rules can apply for any Trans* person. We highly recommend using this as a name selection template but its also important to note that going off the beaten path may lead you to a name you identify with far more.
