Being a voice for a group can be stressful.
Advocacy

This weeks topic will be about Advocacy and why you are an advocate. This topic will be fairly personal and doesn't require a ton of background information. For the research I decided to focus on a few big names in Trans advocacy and see what they had to say on the subject of becoming an advocate. Things you might want to talk about include

  1.  Why you decided to become an advocate for trans rights?
  2.  Why you decided to go the route of being on a camera instead of a more behind the scenes role?
  3.  Was there anything in particular that you felt pushed you to become an outspoken advocate for trans rights?
  4. Do you feel comfortable in the role of an Advocate?

Being an Advocate!

Being a trans advocate can be quite difficult and while things in general are getting better for trans people being out there means you will encounter a lot of harsh criticism of everything you say and how you say it. But you also have to deal with the general public's lack of knowledge and sensitivity about trans issues. Advocate and author Janet Mock recently dealt with this in a very public way when she went on CNN's nightly show and was interviewed by Piers Morgan. Piers asked her several inappropriate questions and framed the entire interview around Mock being "formally a man". She would later tweet about how upset the entire thing made her and even those tweets made headlines for her "slamming Piers Morgan". When you are a public figure and advocate everything you say can be taken as attacks or in general scrutinized.

Punk singer Laura Jane Grace had said in several interviews that she is uncomfortable how much weight her words now have when she speaks about trans issues. She is in the punk band Against Me and outside of the occasional article about her band the spotlight was rarely on her. Now though she is seen as a huge trans advocate and that title was pushed on her somewhat. Other people have taken their fame and used it to be a voice for advocacy. Laverne Cox gained attention for her role in the Netflix hit show Orange is the New Black but she gained even more recognition for taking that fame and using it to start a national dialog on trans issues. She embraced the attention and has used it to talk about her life and how she felt growing up and also to talk about important issues in the trans community.

These women used fame in different ways to advance trans visibility and trans advocacy. Do you see yourself in any of these people? The reluctant advocate who didn't want her trans identity the focal point of everything she does. Do you see yourself as wanting to go out there and make this a career and the focus of your life? Or do you see your advocacy in a different way?
