Medical Options
Transitioning and your fertility Fertility can be a very overwhelming thing to think about, especially if you are still a teenager and you may not know what you want to do with your life. But at least knowing your options is very important and if you want taking steps to retain your ability to have children in the future.
If a person transitioning is under the age of 16 there doctors will likely put them on drugs commonly refereed to as puberty blockers to stop the effects of testosterone or estrogen on there bodies. Luckily this early first step has no long term effects on a trans persons ability to conceive children and it is used widely now because it allows a person to begin transition without some of the long term effects of things like HRT. Around the age of 16 though a much tougher choice needs to be made. The question of whether or not to start HRT is a difficult one due to the irreversible effects of it. Another important thing to think about is that if a trans person is under 18 in the US and in a lot of the world they can not make medical decisions for themselves. The question of HRT and there fertility is ultimately in the hands of the Trans persons parents.
HRT has long term effects on the ability for a person to have children. Both trans men and trans women will become at least temporarily sterile while on HRT. Stopping HRT has a chance to reverse this effect but the odds are once you start HRT you will be unable to conceive children naturally forever. An even more permanent option is surgery on the genitals. Either Vaginoplasty or Hysterectomy have the effect of permanently removing the option to conceive children.
There are many ways for trans people to have children though. Trans men can opt to not have a hysterectomy and take there chances with HRT hoping it only makes them temporarily sterile. Trans women have it somewhat easier with the option of banking sperm for later use before going on HRT. Another important thing is to note that biologically having children is not the only way to have kids. Adoption, sperm donors for your partner, or surrogacy to carry a child are all perfectly viable things and still allow you to have kids
