refclinicReferee Clinic
Referee Clinic, September 20-21, 2014
by International Referee Mary Mahon

Day One: Referee Class - Dana Hall - Wellesley, MA
Day Two: Observation Event - C and Under at Boston Fencing Club

This two day format fulfills both the seminar and the observation requirements for becoming a referee in a single weekend. The online test must be completed within one week of the class and observation.

The NE Division will reimburse members after the above criteria is completed and the member referees at least one division event by the end of the season. Additionally, undergraduates attending colleges/universities within the NE division will be eligible for reimbursement after completing the same criteria.

It's Important to note that this seminar isn't just for aspiring referees, but also for current referees, athletes, coaches, division officers, and parents so that they understand current right-of-way application, rules, and tournament format. Mary is the only CRI that has a full PowerPoint and video compliment to the seminar and it has proven to be an excellent teaching tool for people of all levels of experience in the fencing community.

Fallclasses
Guide to Fall Classes
Guide to Fall Classes
Classes start the week of September 9th. We've added a new level for youth fencers (Level 3) and will be making a few minor changes to our format.

Learn to Fence classes are for beginners -- those with little or no prior instruction in fencing.  Students will remain at the Learn to Fence level for at least two terms before moving on to Skills, in order to gain mastery of basic techniques and protocols.  Basic footwork, simple attacks and defense are covered, as are the rules and etiquette of the sport.

Skills classes are designed for students who are comfortable with the elements covered in Learn to Fence, and who are ready for more complex techniques.   This intermediate class is designed to be repeated, and even advanced level students can benefit from the technical instruction provided.

Strategy and Tactics classes are for fencers who have demonstrated a commitment to improving their skills and applying those skills in competition or recreational bouting.  A wide variety of topics will be covered, from situational bouting to tournament preparation.  Youth Level Three requires coach's approval.
