Mr. Jeff Crins Physical Education Teacher of the Year 2014

Mr. Jeff Crins

Dr. Kerri Tunnicliffe, President of the Rhode Island Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (RIAHPERD), announced that the High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year 2014 for RIAHPERD is our own North Smithfield High School's, Jeff Crins.  Nominations came from peers in the field and with a rigorous process that followed.  Mr. Crins was nominated because of his hard work and dedication to working with high school students.  We are proud to have him join an elite group of past teacher-of-the-year recipients.  Jeff is truly deserving of this award for his dedication, passion, and innovative teaching practices.  Please join me in congratulating Jeff for bringing great pride to our school district.

North Smithfield Middle School Supports - "Be Like Brit"

From left to right: Morgan Perry, Elizabeth Jalette, Mrs. Gengel, Alyssa Narodowy, Grace Pelletier and Emma Grant.

The MIDDLE SCHOOL is parti
cipating in a drive to collect items for the "Be Like Brit" organization.  Britney Gengel was a college student who was killed in an earthquake in Haiti while she was there working with the poor.  Her parents started an orphanage there in her name.  Students will be collecting items that the children in Haiti can use - from shampoo to paper cups and plates.  This initiative is a community service project for one of our 7th grade students, Elizabeth Jalette.   We hope to collect a lot of items for the children of Haiti.  Thank you, Elizabeth, for your work on this noble cause.

North Smithfield Seniors Recognized for Financial Literacy Achievement

In a ceremony and celebration held at the high school on March 19, General

Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Navigant CEO Gary Furtado, Superintendent Lindberg, and Principal Rob Mezzanotte were joined by other administrators from government, school district, and Navigant Credit Union in speaking to the importance of personal finance for young adults.  The students were then recognized for their efforts in this program and awarded certificates in Financial Literacy.

All seniors at NSHS this year, as part of their Senior Project Skills class, were required to complete the EverFi Financial Literacy Program.  EverFi is a top-notch educational technology platform used to teach, assess, and certify students in financial education.  Our participation was made possible by sponsoring partner Navigant Credit Union.

Halliwell School Supports Healthy Eating

In the last few weeks, our District Food Service supported a program called RI Root Veggie week.  We served a different RI Root Vegetable Tuesday through Friday and students who purchased lunch each day were entered into a drawing for a free T-Shirt on Friday.  We were able to give away 3 T-shirts per lunch period!

North Smithfield Middle Unified School Basketball Takes "The Plunge"

We want to share another awesome event that our Unified Basketball Team and families and High School students took part in on March 1st.

Students from several area high schools participated Saturday, March 1st, in the project Unified High School Plunge held for the first time in conjunction with that weekend's seventh annual torch run plunge and super plunge. Students from both North Smithfield High School and Middle School took part in this historic event. They all took a dip in icy water at Goddard Park in Warwick to help raise money for Special Olympics Rhode Island

Thanks to Cristina Lima, Valerie Carnevale, Deb Downes, Angela DaCosta, Laurie Pendergast, and our Unified Basketball Team and their families for taking part in this awesome event with fundraising and helping out on the day of the event.

FYI... We were the only Middle School taking the plunge and participating!

Alan Shawn Feinstein Speaks at Halliwell School

Alan Shawn Feinstein

On Thursday, March 20, Mr. Feinstein personally presented a check for $500 to Mrs. Jolin, School Principal, during an inspiring motivational speech to our students and staff.

Halliwell School's Annual Holiday Food Drive had a special twist this year. The generous Feinstein Foundation invited us to let them know how many cans our school raised for needy families during the holiday season and promised to donate a check to our school for a matching amount.

Mr. Feinstein challenged our students to continue to do good deeds and to record them in a Junior Scholar Journal each day. He also generously provided each student with a Feinstein Junior Scholar card.  We will continue to strive to do good deeds each day as part of our school mission and motto, REACH for the Stars!

Helping Foster Children Through Difficult Times

It is HOPE FULL RI: see our new website at: http://www.hopefullri.org

Follow us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/HopeFullRI

Here's the story:

There are over 2,500 children in foster care in the state of Rhode Island.  These children are moved frequently from home to home, sometimes

unexpectedly.  Their belongings are often put in trash bags.  That STINKS!

Our hope is to provide these children with a simple handmade bag, and maybe even a comforting fleece blanket they can call their own.

Our goal is to inspire people to make and donate a bag and/or blanket or two, and pass the word on to others.  Hand-crafted bags and comfy fleece blankets will give the children a sense of security and comfort that being with their own possessions can bring during times that can be tough.

So - Will you JOIN US???  Make a bag - have a gathering with your friends, kids, anyone who can tie a knot in a piece of fleece, or sew a line with a sewing machine.  And if sewing or knot-tying is "knot" your thing, we gladly accept donations of new fabric, thread, fleece (fun colors), or notes of encouragement so we can help these kids.  You can also "sponsor" a bag, and we will donate it in your name.  Check out the website for info on that.

This is a way to have fun while doing good - Now, you know.

Thank you so much for looking at our website, and for passing it on to your wide, wonderful world of people who care.
