As staff member Mary Lou White prepared college letters of recommendation for teens this spring, her task stirred some mixed emotions. From Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss, she guided them from one reading level to the next, and one particular story stands out in her mind. When she first met 13 year old Brennen Neeley, he made an odd but polite request for books on "astrophysics". "At first I just thought he wanted attention" she thought, but after she showed him the books, he spent hours studying them. For Brennen, the library became more than a place to spin out the time, as he bonded with the library staff and other teens.
For Mary Lou, his self-motivation inspired her. Read More about how his curiosity and determination put him on track to enter Duke University this summer, as a proud first generation college student.
