Ghosts of Blue Spring Farm
Five miles west of Georgetown on U.S. 460 is Blue Spring Farm, former site of  working plantations and Choctaw Academy, a  Native American boarding school owned by wealthy politician and land owner Richard Mentor Johnson in the 1800's.
Johnson's turbulent political career is one of Scott County's more fascinating historical footnotes.  Elected Martin Van Buren's vice-president by a single vote, Johnson drew condemnation for his relationship with Julia Chinn, his African American common law wife.
For the past five summers, Indiana University historian Amrita Myers visited libraries, including the Library of Congress, and SCPL's Kentucky Room, piecing together Chinn's biography.  Julia attended Great Crossing Church, leading a full life as a wife and mother, an accomplished manager who operated Johnson's plantations in his absence.
Read More about Myers' project, her friendships with librarians and local historians, and a new perspective on 18th & 19th century Scott County history.

When you use your library card, you protect  the environment by "borrowing" items instead of accumulating more "stuff".  Being  good stewards of our  resources  -water, light, and energy - sets a great example for future generations.  Interested in doing even more? Rain barrels provide free "soft" water for irrigation and  reduce harmful runoff.
