A Distinguished Volunteer
17 years to the day Ellie Caroland started as a genealogy volunteer in the Kentucky Room, she recalled the tiny research room in the downtown library with affectionate detail. Her perspective is even more valuable as SCPL prepares to add more space and state of the art equipment for patrons.  Spend just a few minutes with Ms. Caroland, though, and her passion for research and history clearly demonstrate no amount of technology is as critical as the determination and patience necessary to trace how a few lines in a deed, a faded yellow newspaper obituary or the grim statistics from five of the bloodiest Civil War Battles inspired her to bring her  great grandfather's story to life.   Click Here to read more about Ellie's legacy and meet new volunteer Nikki Chowing.
Day One:   Construction Begins
Scott County Public Library's Board of Trustees
awarded the renovation contract to Morel Construction         February 13.  The 13,700 foot addition increases adult and children's programming space, will hold more materials and add more public meeting room space.
The company, based in Louisville, Kentucky, also completed projects for Boone and Oldham County public libraries.
"We're excited about this and pleased to have you on board," said Board President Michael Tackett to construction officials during the meeting.  Following pre-construction meetings, the administrator and project manager anticipate work will start January 26.
Library services will be disrupted as little as possible, but we ask for your patience and understanding during improvements. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned - watch our website for updates.
Interpreting World Events
No matter what news source you rely on today,  recent events in France and across the world challenge unity and stability when senseless acts of terrorism, tragedy and violence occur.
When headlines are overwhelming, remember your public library is not only a quiet sanctuary, it is a community center housing ideas and information.  Over 30,000 adult non fiction books and 2000 non fiction DVD's in our collection make it possible to study religion, history and politics, which in turn enhance understanding. Click Here  for recommendations.

During construction, the large Quiet Study Room will be used for library programming.

The Omnibus Appropriations Bill is impacting public libraries.  This year, SCPL will receive only the main tax forms -1040, 1040A & 1040 EZ.  Instruction booklets will not be available either, but here's how we can help you.
Our public computers are available for printing forms and instructions online. Our staff can assist patrons who need help printing forms or instructions.  Some reproducible forms will be available.  Cost to print is ten cents per page.
