"One cold and wet day in 1960, the Squadron Operations Officer needed a pilot for a routine flight.  He asked for volunteers and I hesitated.  I was young, it was miserable flying weather, and there was Christmas shopping that I had planned to do with Midge and our new baby, Julie."

What did this young pilot decide?  Read More  about author Bruce Gordon's new book, Spirit of  Attack, a memoir about piloting fighter and training jets in Alaska and Viet Nam.  Gordon will share "Fighter Pilot Stories" April 17 @ 7 p.m.

LocalAuthorLocal Author  Bruce Gordon's love of adventure stems from an unusual childhood.  His father, an executive with Eastman Kodak Company, brought his family along as he
traveled through the Suez Canal, France, England and the Philippine Islands.  Gordon joined the ROTC in 1955,  became a fighter pilot and completed 132 combat missions in Vietnam.  The first half of the memoir features highlights from Gordon's military career followed by the stories of veteran pilots who flew P-38 missions in Romanian oil fields during WWII,  observed atomic bomb testing and flew missions in Vietnam.  Written in a simple-straight forward style featuring history, humor and tragedy, the narratives illuminate how the  Spirit of  Attack is defined by relying on your training and experience to not only do your duty, but to live your life with honor.

TournamentofBooksTournament of Books  by Stephanie Sawyer
Kelly Breswick  and I agree (Look Out Big Blue Nation!) enthusiastic young readers hold their own against Wildcat fans or crowds surging against the velvet ropes on Oscar night.  Authors winning the Printz, Newbery, Caldecott and Morris Awards for outstanding young adult literature generate national attention, so in the spirit of  "March Madness"  welcome to our Tournament of  Books .  Visit our display and track the Bluegrass Nominees (chosen by students in grades 6-8 and 9-12);  Morris and Printz awards for first time writers and outstanding young adult literature.  Brackets also include (10)  SCPL staff picks - books which received recognition (yet no award), are popular check-outs or we simply enjoyed.   Predicting  a winner is as tough as assembling a Trifecta on Derby Day.  A Morris honoree, In the Shadow of the Blackbirds, knocked the Printz winner Midwinterblood  out of contention.  Will Fangirl, Eleanor & Park, Cinder, Every Day, Dream Thieves  and The False Prince survive? Busy teens cannot read all the books, but that's O.K.!   Vote anyway!   Browse our descriptions and book jackets to decide.  Unlike a $350 ticket to the Final Four or a $4000 box at Churchill Downs,  it's  fun and free!

EdibleBookProject Edible Book Project

Come to the library March 31 at 7 p.m. to learn how to decorate your entry in this regional library contest OR vote for Scott County entries April 5 11-1:30 p.m.  The first weekend in April, 6 libraries  host the first Bluegrass Edible Book Festival.  Separate contests will be held at each library, and the public votes for winning entries for Taste, Creativity, Interpretation/Concept, Presentation, Wit/Humor.  Judges select the overall winner to compete in an interlibrary competition for a grand prize of $500.00.

A national and international event, it is no accident it is scheduled as close to April Fool's day as possible.  What's your favorite book?  Where's the cake mix?  Try your luck creating something silly or a fine and edible work of art.  Les Miserables and The Count of Monte Cristo appear above.  For inspiration, see entries from around the world at books2eat.com.  Find detailed information and contest rules on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bluegrassediblebookfest; or stop by the library - our staff is happy to answer questions.
