Power Secrets of Master Negotiators Seminar

The Northern California Chapter is hosting a seminar on tools for negotiators. Participants will gain an understanding of the psychology of negotiation and develop powerful skills to ensure success.  Studies reveal that negotiation is one of the top three skills in life and on the job. Great negotiators become key contributors to any company or organization. Great negotiators know exactly what they want and exactly how to get it. Their communication during negotiations is crisp, clear and concise. When difficulties arise during negotiations, they have the ability to make the necessary adjustments to achieve winning solutions. Contact Juanita Mitchell at the Chapter office to register your attendance.

NECA District 9 Meeting
Held Last Week

NECA held its annual District 9 meeting last week in Laguna Beach. Chapter members in attendance included Greg Long, Long Electric; Kurt Brinkman, Intrepid Electronics; Tammy Evans, WPCS; Mike Boehmer, H.A. Bowen Electric; Tom Curran and John Modica, representing the Alameda Electrical Contractors Trust; and Chapter staff members Greg Armstrong and Pete Halver.

The general council meeting began with reports from each Chapter, who provided an update on local area negotiations, economic outlook, manpower shortage issues and potential resolutions. Chapter member and ELECTRI International Chairman Greg Long did a presentation on ELECTRI's recently published Changer Order Research report, and the critical necessity for change order reform. He highlighted many sections of the report and the pending legislation in California. He urged contractors to use the research by ELECTRI to push for change and improvement in the way change orders are handled by awarding agencies and general contractors. Chairman Long also asked contractors to disseminate the report to colleagues, engineers, customers and other subcontractors. The message of fair and timely payment for change orders was well received.

Politico Director Eddie Bernacchi provided a legislative report of past and current legislation, and discussed the status of AB-1347 related to prompt payment, dispute resolution, and change order reform. There was discussion on California's new sick leave law and the successful efforts to insert exemption language related to employees covered by collective bargaining agreements. The meeting concluded with presentations and educational sessions on Green Energy Market Opportunities, Business Development, and National LMCC Partnering opportunities. Note:  The Alameda County Division has scheduled a National LMCC partnering session with IBEW Local 595, slated for July 30-31.  Details to follow.

The District 9 meeting is always a lucrative meeting for Chapter staff and contractors. We hope that many of you will take the opportunity to attend the next meting in 2016 in Scottsdale, AZ. We will provide details, as they become available.

Summer Safety Series-Registration
State Building & Construction Trades Council Training

The State Building and Construction Trades Council (SBCTC) is offering a series of safety training classes this summer (see attached flyer) at its headquarters in Sacramento. In presenting these one-day classes at no cost to building trades affiliates, the intent is to engage union staff, signatory contractors, apprenticeship staff and union members to receive training on key construction safety and health issues facing workers in California. In addition to training, the sessions will also provide an excellent opportunity for participants to discuss and problem-solve real world safety issues. Through its federal OSHA grant program, the SBCTC has developed excellent training curricula on critical topics impacting all crafts.
